fake drugs burnt

fake drugs burntOver N10 million fake and expired drugs was destroyed by the Osun State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria.
It was also gathered that the ministry and the PCN also sealed illegal medicine stores from where the drugs were seized.
It was learnt that some of the drugs have been seized since about four years.
The drugs were burnt at a dump site in Osogbo in presence of State Director, National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control, Mr. Kayode Fagboyo.
The Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the Osun State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Adepeju Ojo, after the destruction of the drugs, said that inspectors from the ministry carried out the raid on the illegal outlets.
She said,  “We have seized the regulated expired drugs and also sealed non-registered  patents stores and the owners of the illegal outlets were apprehended.
“The seized drugs  are estimated over N10 million. We are calling those seeking expired or fake drugs to desist. Our people also should patronise registered outlets and make sure that the drugs they buy are not fake or expired.”

imageFrom the pre colonial era, when in 1951 H. L. Butcher Commission gave  birth to Osun District, till 1991, when the General Ibrahim Babangida-led administration created Osun out of the old Oyo State, several efforts have been made to place the state on the proper position it ought to occupy on the world map. But none has been able to attain the golden age as it is today within four years under Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, governor of the state.
From the days of surplus, when the military administrators were in-charge, till the coming of the civilian administration in1999, except for the period under Chief Bisi Akande, who started the restructuring of the infrastructure and the opening of the rural roads, so as to increase agricultural products, no one else has done what Aregbesola has done under four years of dynamic and purposeful leadership.
Abraham Lincoln stated: ” Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. ” Power is a test of character. In the hands of a person of integrity, it is of tremendous benefit: in the hands of a tyrant, it causes terrible destruction.” The struggle for power lasted 3 and half years for the incubent. Under 4 years, most of the chronic political opponents with whom he wrestled power from have since become one in a political family. It is a credit to Aregbesola that his first term has brought in his successor; Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Senator Isaka Adeleke , first Executive Governor of the state, Peter Babalola (Peter Action) and many other political gladiators.  The implication of the aforesaid,  is the presence of peace and security in the state.  The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, Section 14 (4) encapsulates that the state must ensure security of lives and properties, as well as the welfare of the  people.  Aregbesola no doubt has done marvellously well in this aspect .
In every age, there comes forth to meet the needs of the hour. Aregbesola’s emergence in the state was similar to the Presidency of Franklin Delaino Roosevelt emergence in the USA presidential election. His major opponents never gave him a chance of success.  The United States was in the midst of depression; banks were falling at an alarming rate; unemployment was rife; and life was brutish,  hard and unpleasant.  But against all odds, FDR emerged victorious. Roosevelt,  in his victory speech, promised to lead the country in a completely new direction. Roosevelt successfully revived the American economy through a socio-economic template he called New Deal.
Aregbesola came on board when the state was in critical need of turn-around. A state noted for poverty, under-development and stagnancy, but the story has since changed,  that even the blind and the deaf now know that development in a magnitude that was unprecedented has taken place, in education, agriculture, infrastructure,  health and in social welfare.
EDUCATION
Aregbesola’s education policy centred on the total man; complete child, complete youth, complete citizen. His aim is to prepare the youths for generational change that will make them technically competent and economically motivated, thereby becoming potential entrepreneurs that will not be wondering or roaming the streets  for jobs that are not available .
The governor shares the view of former American President,  Bill Clinton, as he stated in Arkansas that ” education is the key to our economic revival and our  perennial quest for prosperity.  We must dedicate more of our limited resources to paying teachers better; expanding educational opportunities in poor and small districts; improving and diversifying vocational and high technology programmes…Without competence in basic skills, our people cannot move on to more advanced achievement. ” The first term of this administration has witnessed huge investment on education, in all the local government areas, there are massive modern school buildings, well-equipped laboratories, as well as other instructional materials to meet the educational pursuit of the 21st century in any part of the world.
The  school reclassification by the Aregbesola’s administration into ; Elementary,  Middle and High schools is synonymous to global trends in which effective teaching and learning take place. The new educational policy is in tandem with the National Educational policy . Under the reclassification,  Osun government runs the modified National 9-3-4 system, as well as the normal school academic calendar. What Osun has now is 4-5-3-4 system, both systems are in harmony with the WAEC syllabus.
O’MEALS SCHEME
In the last two years, Aregbesola’s administration has successfully embarked on  O’meal scheme,  that is the school feeding programme.  The result has been tremendous and amazing. So far, the pupils are robusly learning with free and well-nutritious meals daily at the huge sum of N3.6 billion annually. Thus, it has positively impacted on the public enrolment of pupils in primary schools, the highest in Nigeria. The school enrolment moved from 155, 318 in May 2012 to over 300, 000 pupils in 2014. These scheme also created jobs for 3, 000 women that prepare the meals. Osun farmers are patronised by the food vendors that utilised farm produces for their meals. Poultry Association members are also smiling to banks, as the pupils are being fed with eggs daily.
Great Britain  did not only emulate the Osun free feeding scheme, in 2013, but invited the governor to address their parliament and to share his experiences with the former colonial lords. Indeed, this invitation and the address has gone a long way in boosting the image of our country and Osun in particular.
OPON IMO
Opon Imo, tablet of knowledge, is an educational computer device for learning,  a celebrated academic tools that has come to revolutionise the academic world. It is a device  for the students and non-students, who strive for knowledge. It has been so programmed to instruct without a visible tutor. It is a mobile libary and  an amazing device that has come to move the world to the next stage for human development. It is the product of a thinking leader, whose desire is to give the best education for a complete man. In the next few years, the world will remember this regime for turning around the education sector, not only of Osun but the whole world.
AGRICULTURE
This agricultural revolution is on and cannot be denied, as the old and young farmers are competing for the war against hunger and poverty in the midst of plenty; due to self-destruction caused by long time neglect of agriculture as a means for living by any serious nation. Africa and Nigeria are blessed by vast arable land but the oil boom that turned oil doom in our nation made people to turn their backs at tilling the soil. Aregbesola has since preached, practiced ‘go back to land’ for battle against poverty. O’REAP is an agricultural project that has given the youths  hope of earning a living. Some of our people are today employers of labour through agricultural investment.
Fertilisers and other useful chemicals that would boost agricultural production have been made available to farmers across the state.  Seedlings were provided, lands cleared by government free of charge for would-be farmers. Cooperative societies were created for farmers to enhance fund for big time farmers. Today, the cost of living is far cheaper and economical. Poverty has been reduced drastically and unemployment has equally reduced and the state economy is adjudged the best seven in the Federation.
As Aregbesola commences his second term,  his desire is to accomplish 20 year’s work under four years that his second term would cover.

timthumb (1)Osun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kolapo Alimi, has inaugurated a consultative committee on internally generated revenue.
The event took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs.
Alimi said the bad financial state occasioned by the persistent dwindling revenue from the Federation Account coupled with the poor internally generated revenue has not only made it difficult for local governments to meet recurrent expenditures but has equally hindered their capacity to deliver dividends of democracy to the grassroots.
He added that it was necessary to have the committee that will advise the government on how to improve revenue generation of local government.
The commissioner then charged the committee to take the assignment with zeal and commitment it deserves.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Muftau Oluwadare, advised the committee to identify loopholes in the internally generated revenue in the local governments and suggest ways of blocking those loop holes.
The NULGE President in the state, Babatunde Adekomi, expressed the readiness of the local government staff to cooperate with the government in the revenue generation drive.
He also charged the revenue collectors in the system to brace up.
Chairman of the committee who is also the Executive Secretary of Olorunda Local Government, Mr Akeem Okunade, explained that the committee was ready to work to improve the revenue base of the local government at this challenging period.
He added that setting up of the committee is an effort towards liberating the local governments in the state from the agonising effect of dwindling revenue from the Federation Account.

3RD NATIONAL CONVENTION PRESIDENTTIAL PRIMARY ELECTION 4a

The Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has said that the emergence of former Head of State, Gen Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress is the best democratic pill to galvanise Nigerians towards the needed change.

He said the former Head of State is not just the candidate of the APC but that of the entire Nigerians who have been yearning for a dramatic and total change.

Aregbesola said the decision by all party men and women to elect the former head of state demonstrates the commitment to presenting a candidate who would not only win the presidential election but go ahead to rescue Nigeria from the present quagmire anti-democratic and anti-development elements had brought her in more than a decade and a half.

Aregbesola, in a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, was quoted as speaking shortly after the declaration of Gen Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the APC after a keenly contested primary held in Lagos.

“We must congratulate Nigerians for the emergence of Gen Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of our party. The excitements, commendations and jubilations that have greeted the election and consequently the announcement of Gen Muhammadu Buhari are clear demonstrations of the fact that Nigerians have been anxious and now poised for an immediate change in Nigeria.

“It is clear now that Nigerians are determined to jettison their religious, tribal, partisan and other mundane interests to rally support for our candidate. Gen Muhammadu Buhari, I can confidently say, is not just the candidate of the All Progressives Congress but the popular choice of entire Nigerians,” Aregbesola was quoted as saying.

Reminding Nigerians of the urgent need to fix the country, Aregbesola said the outcome of the primary election itself confirmed that the APC has taken transparency, the fight against corruption and graft to a new height.

“People have chosen the best man for the job regardless of all other less edifying considerations. Buhari represents the face of the required battle against corruption. He represents openness and commitment to good governance. For those who consider the awful impact of corruption on our country, the choice of Gen Buhari would easily translate to the readiness of Nigerians to battle against the most debilitating scourge against the country’s growth,” Aregbesola said.

Listing the challenges that lay before an APC government at the centre, Aregbesola reminded Nigerians that the 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party at the centre has spelt economic doom, political complications and social morass.

“We have witnessed the most horrendous crimes against the soul of this country. There has been a mindless rape of the country by a gang of looters who have made Nigeria a laughing stock in the comity of other nations.

“There is needless hunger in a country with many untapped opportunities. All the critical sectors have been bled to states of coma and what we have left as a country is fractured entity gasping for breath.

“With the election of General Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians are assured that a new Nigeria is possible,” he added.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Nigeria is in dire straits! No thanks to a system that joys in fortune for the few and misfortune for the many. Currently rated as one of Africa’s worst governed countries; and with a threatening political terrain, comical economic life and confusing rural sustenance, that dear country has become a world of sin and woe, practically unable to fulfill its constitutional obligations to its component parts is no longer news.
As a result of the gross incompetence of her leaders, Nigeria has become a backward country of backward people who cringe before backward leaders. Ours is a country of wounded hopes, appallingly submerged in the whelming flood of blind pursuits and egocentric ambitions. Armed bandits have seized control of a sizable portion of a region of this fractured country while another suffers from the aftereffects of aquatic assault.

Unlike in civilized climes, where soldiers elect to fight, even die for their fatherland, in our country, our ill-equipped, ill-motivated, ill-prepared, overwhelmed and outdone military Generals shamelessly scamper for safety at the mere rumours of war…

In our very eyes, Nigeria is now regarded as one of the world’s worst places to grow old. The World Bank has also revealed that, unless some steps are taken in the right direction, by the Year 2030, Nigeria may become one of the world’s main contributors to global poverty. As we speak, Nigeria has dropped to 127th place on the Global Competitive Index as her fortune in FIFA ranking slid to the 42nd position. She is the 15th Most Failed Nation in the world and ranks an unimpressive 110th out of 117 countries on the Global Innovation Index. As if these are not enough for a country as troubled as Nigeria, reports also have it that, between 2016 to around 2020s, Nigeria is likely to be overtaken by Angola as Africa’s largest crude oil producer. Reason: “crude theft and regulatory uncertainties in the Nigerian oil industry.”
So far, so troubling! It is in this Epistle of Darkness which currently defines Nigeria that Rauf Aregbesola is again taking up the challenge of running the affairs of Osun State for the next four years. Having first mounted the saddle on October 27, 2010, the ‘Land of Virtue’, under Aregbesola’s leadership has in the last four years experienced genuine transformation in all its important sectors and attracted development as a result of its new status. A man not given to the putridity of inanity or the extremity of frivolity, the 57year-old Mechanical Engineer-turned-politician represents a new dream, new vision and new hope for a country in search of productive and God-fearing leadership. He is a grassroots politician of immense wealth of experience and a willing companion in times of trouble who never allows the fortunes of life to becloud his sense of humour and belongingness.
Aregbesola is sticktoitive and understands not only “how great it is to be great” but also “how greater it is to be human.” He is a man of quiet courage and undying faith who is neither shy nor weary of confronting the trends, tricks, arrogance, even, the ignorance of Abuja and its anti-people policies.
One good turn, it is often said, deserves another! Now that Aregbesola is beginning the second lap of his administration, I have a buoyant feeling that, like his first term in office, the next four years will be as eventful as they will in the end turn out to be a huge success. Osun State will continue to experience growth and all eyes will see it. That the consummate politician has therefore started on a sound note is not only commendable, it is also a sign of greater things to come. For instance, while the campaign lasted, work never stopped for a day on ongoing projects.
Not only that, while we are reliably informed that Aregbesola has never earned any salary as governor in the last four years, like a man already on a mission to succeed, he has inaugurated no fewer than ten huge projects, less than two months into his re-election. Among them are Oranmiyan New Town, Central Mosque of Osun State House of Assembly, and the Electronic Tax Clearance Certificate (E-TCC), facilitated by Osun State Internal Revenue Services. Others are rural community projects under the Replication of UNICEF Community Development Initiative Programme; and the construction of 225 kilometre rural roads under the Osun Rural Access and Mobility Project (RAMP).
In the wake of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) scourge, the state rose to the occasion by establishing four EVD Isolation Centres in the state’s three Senatorial Districts and Osogbo, the state capital, in addition to the distribution of over-2000 non-contact forehead infrared thermometers to State- and Federal Government-owned schools as well as provision of over-2000 boreholes and toilets, together with potable water supply to residents of the state for the purpose of curbing the outbreak of water-related diseases. The World Bank has also promised to support the state with an interest-free loan as part of its contributions towards the enhancement of basic education delivery in the state.
In Osun State, the amount charged for the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy now stands at N30,000 only, as against N100,000, for a piece of land. The ‘Tablet of Knowledge’, popularly referred to as ‘Opon Imo’ is running its course and Agriculture is being accorded its pride of place. Ditto for the School Feeding Programme, O’MEALS, which continues to attract national and international recognition.
In the words of Bear Bryant, “It’s not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.” Students of Political Practice will readily admit that the expression of love and the show of support for Aregbesola’s cause remain unsurpassed in Nigeria’s recent history. For instance, on the day of the election, I was at a stage moved to tears when a group of well-wishers from Kogi State vowed, through telephone conversations, to give neither sleep to their eyes nor food to their mouths until Aregbesola was declared re-elected. Again, I doubt if I ever remembered the location of Elf Filling Station on Iwo Road, Ibadan, until we received unsolicited ‘gird-your-loin’ information from a well-wisher that more than ten buses, carrying some People’s Democratic Party, PDP mercenaries, were already on their way to Osogbo!
For a fact, while the electioneering lasted, I never for a minute nursed the thought that Aregbesola would not win the election. Of concern to me however was the margin by which his opponents would be roundly trounced. My hope was assuredly buoyed by the remarks of a prominent labour leader in Ile-Ife that “a killer will never become a ruler in Osun State.” However, going by President Goodluck Jonathan’s body language before and during the election, keen watchers of Nigeria’s political experiment would readily admit that it was not in Abuja’s interest to allow a free, fair and credible election. For quite a good majority of us on the field on the day of the election, respite it was when Ooni of Ife’s Message of Congratulations to Governor Aregbesola on his re-election came in. With the message, interestingly, from Iyiola Omisore’s traditional ruler, the routing of perfidy from our land was sealed!
And, while the PDP, synonymous with peddling half-truths and absolute falsehood, never for once disappointed us as a resolute electorate, Omisore, Abuja’s preferred candidate, failed to learn some salient lessons on how not to be a hero. He refused to die when dying still has honour and he paid dearly for it. Indeed, neither the ‘cash-and-kind’ federal might nor his suspect ‘House-to-House Campaign’ strategy, comically tagged ‘Campaign on the Run’, or ‘Whatz up Campaign’, could save the already-destined-to-drown ‘Te s’oju e’ politician. In the end, the Almightiness of God prevailed over the vanityness of man as the electorate came out tranquilly, defying every form of intimidation, especially, from conspiratorial sympathizers and those Patrick Obahiagbon referred to as ‘Political Halleluyah Boys’, and confidently “demonstrated the Omoluabi essence” that has “made our race proud.”
A renowned polymath and one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, Benjamin Franklin defines democracy as “two wolves and a small lamb voting on what to have for dinner.” According to “the First American”, “Freedom under a constitutional republic is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.” If we may ask: why has Africa’s democratization not transcended the realm of the proverbial ‘Victory of the Lips’ and why have we not gone past doing old things the new way with old things remaining as end results? Why has peace in Nigeria remained “more of an uneasy calm than enduring peace” with “political crises, social unrest, inter-religious conflicts and crimes, insecurity of life and property” becoming the order of the day? In spite of our rulers’ claim to having solutions to our self-inflicted problems, why have things refused to work our way and why are those who, all their lives, toiled to see the country grow dying without realizing their dream of a politically peaceful and economically prosperous nation?
What is ‘Stomach Infrastructure’ and why has it become a defining feature of our democratic direction? On the other hand, how do we justify being in the opposition when, even as resources are limited, those with the ‘power to make and spread’ among members continue to prove too greedy, pretentious and inaccessible? Wait a minute: from where did Omisore’s handlers source those fraudulent figures with which they were at a stage boastfully claiming victory over popular will? Indeed, which sections of the Electoral Law support the arrest, better referred to as abduction, of over-50 prospective voters already on a queue, waiting for accreditation?
Were Isiaka Adeleke still a member of PDP, would security agents have barged on his compound with an attempt on his life the way they did on the morning of August 9? By the same token, why wasn’t any member of PDP arrested the way All Progressives Congress, APC, stalwarts were forcefully taken away from their homes and dumped in detention facilities by hooded terrorists who pretended as security operatives? Again, I ask: what was the mission of Niger Delta Youth for Jonathan (NDYJ) in Osun State during the election and why should its agents go as far as threatening to illegally shut down a State Broadcasting Station?
Michel Eyquem De Montaigne describes man as “stark mad”; one who “cannot make a flea, and yet he will be making gods by the dozens.” On a personal note, I have never been an apostle of a one-party state; for, if, where, and when it happens, democracy no doubt has lost its essence. Essentially, the Biblical Parable of the Lost Sheep has shown us how healthy competition could be the tonic of democracy. In other words, while a one-party state is not good for any country, the opposition also owes its supporters a duty of honesty, openness and sincerity of purpose. With a particular reference to Nigeria, one can only pray that Nigeria’s thirty six plus one states would not end up in one pocket, for that’s how money politics works!
Osun governorship election is over and it is presumed that governance has replaced politics. Thanks be to God who did not “not suffer” us “to be tempted above that” we “are able; but also”made a way to escape.” By now, those who were using religion as a potent tool to set the state ablaze ought to have been cleansed of their filth. Osun State has never been Islamized and nobody is contemplating it.
In Osun, we succeeded in wiping out the relevance of the political enchanters, attention-seekers and a band of Pharisean cult, which gloried in excessive vanity. As we therefore confidently march into the future, with Aregbesola as the sailor of our ship of state, “in righteousness shall” our state “be established.” As our land has turned against sorcerers and oppressors, long shall we continue, not only “to trample on snakes and scorpions” but also “to overcome all the power of the enemy”. And, because He lives, Osun State will continue to shine like the sun; and the name of the Lord who “knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations” will ever be praised.
May God save us from ourselves!

Viewpoint-illustration2Our performance in the first term endeared us to you and convinced you to give us the mandate for another term
   – Governor Rauf Aregbesola in his inauguration speech on Thursday, November 27, 2014.
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of Osun State, had at least three reasons to celebrate when he was inaugurated as governor for a second term. My focus here is not so much on the reasons for celebration as on their implications for our young democracy. However, I first have to bore you with the reasons for celebration in order to appreciate the discussion that follows.
First, Aregbesola won a hard-fought electoral battle against the power machine of the Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP operatives maligned his administration virtually throughout his first term and distorted his records during the campaigns. In the days leading up to the election, Osun voters were intimidated by unprecedented security presence. Finally, on the eve of the election and the very day of the election, Aregbesola’s supporters were harassed, and as many as 700 of them were arrested or otherwise prevented from carrying out their legitimate duties. Clearly, these are not the best ways to grow a democracy.
Second, in spite of all odds, Aregbesola won the election by a wide margin. Not only did he win with 55 per cent of all lawful votes, being the widest margin of victory in recent governorship elections, he garnered over 70 per cent of the female votes.
Third, Aregbesola would be the first governor of the state to have legitimately won reelection and, therefore, the first to serve a legitimate second term in office. Interestingly, his predecessors had teamed up with him and were by his side during the inauguration.
What is more, Osun voters, who made his re-election possible, were at the inauguration in all their diversity – traditional rulers, religious leaders, political leaders, business leaders, professionals, market women, artisans, youths, and so on. It was an unusually large crowd for a second term inauguration and on a week day.
My encounter with one of the voters at the inauguration venue was quite instructive. The woman was pleading earnestly with the security at the gate to let her into the stadium. I decided to intervene, when I observed that she had a child on her back, while holding her young daughter by the right hand and her son by the left. The security at the gate would not let her into the VIP section of the stadium. Besides, she had no invitation card. I decided to lead her to another gate and pleaded with the security there to let her in.
On the way to the other gate, I asked her why she came with her children, and without an invitation card. She said she wanted to see the governor who feeds her children in school, gives them free uniform, and gets “Ijoba” (the government) to buy fruits from her kiosk. “Iruu re s’owon pupo (his likes are very scarce)”, she added. The sentiment she expressed reflects the attitude of most Osun women towards Aregbesola.
This leads to the first of three key issues arising from Aregbesola’s inauguration, namely, the role of performance as a qualification for re-election in a democracy. This is an important issue in Aregbesola’s case, given the historical, political, and media contexts of his re-election. Historically, no governor before him since 1999 ever won re-election. The odds were equally stacked against him politically: If there was one governor the PDP and the Presidency wanted out of power, it was Aregbesola. Moreover, he was a target of negative press, which often jumped on the bandwagon of the opposition to blow up distorted information about the man and his programmes.
So, why and how did he win? Two short answers: Outstanding performance and the resilience of an appreciative electorate. Here is how Aregbesola put it in his inauguration speech: “We revamped agriculture and made it a profitable venture for farmers. We have positioned our youths for greatness by providing them with quality education. We have redefined the infrastructure of education by building state of the art schools, and proving cutting edge technology, free school uniforms, free meals and so on. We have empowered our people economically through all the ‘O’ projects: O’REAP, O’MEALS, O’BEEF, O’HUB, O’HONEY, O’CLEAN and so on. We have made micro-credit available to our people on a large scale, … we have lifted the GDP of the state, making Osun the seventh largest economy in Nigeria. We have cared for the environment in an unprecedented way. We have banished flooding and cleaned the environment of filth … There is no local government that did not partake in our local and intercity road projects. We have embarked on a most ambitious urban renewal programme. We have cared for the old, the weak and infirm while special people have not escaped our touch. We have delivered on our six integral action programme”.
This leads to the second issue: Why and how was Aregbesola able to accomplish so much with limited resources and within so short a period? First, it must be appreciated that Aregbesola is a trained engineer, a pragmatic and seasoned administrator of people and resources. For eight straight years, he was the Commissioner for Works in Lagos State, under whose watch the unprecedented urban renewal projects in Lagos were crafted. His knowledge of policymaking and project execution was deployed to its fullest when he became a governor in Osun. Even more importantly, he has long adopted an ideology of governance that puts people first. The lesson here is simple: Elect candidates who have cognate experience in governance and have verifiable track records.
Second, Aregbesola recruited the best people, all professionals in their own right, to his cabinet and created the Bureau of Social Services to monitor and oversee all state projects. The Bureau, headed by Femi Ifaturoti, is staffed with engineers, architects, lawyers, quantity surveyors, and other project specialists, who monitor and provide monthly assessments of all ongoing projects throughout the state. BOSS, as the department came to be known, has become an institution in the Osun government circle.
Third, Aregbesola got national and international sponsors, private partners, and Osun citizens involved in appropriate projects. He also employed direct labour, where appropriate, by engaging volunteers and thousands of young graduates in his O’YES programme. Most importantly, he ensured that every single project he embarked upon generated jobs for Osun citizens and he encouraged the reinvestment of their earnings within the state. As a result, Osun became the seventh largest economy in the nation.
Finally, he adopted a governance ideology of progressivism, which views social and economic development as twin engines of growth. It was not enough for him to invoke Obafemi Awolowo. He reinvented him in his approach to governance, by putting people first in all his programmes and projects. Surely, his style is different from the sage’s; but the results would have gladdened the sage as they did Osun voters.
The critical question now is about the sustainability of the programmes and projects. For a start, Aregbesola’s To-Do list over the next four years must include four items.
First, he should consolidate the programmes and projects he has so far embarked upon. Second, he should focus more on the necessary infrastructure that connects the people with one another and with the projects. Third, he should ensure that institutions, such as BOSS, are so entrenched in Osun governance paradigm that future state governors cannot brush them aside. Fourth, future leaders must be identified and groomed, who would share the same philosophy of governance and advance on the programmes and projects. He should develop an enduring Osun brand.
