Humanizing Education Through Reclassification

Humanizing Education Through Reclassification
The recent efforts of the incumbent administration in the State of Osun at bringing back the long-lost pride and glory in the Education Sub-sector, especially in the public domain now attracts our attention.
The efforts of the administration, which kick-started with the introduction of free, functional and qualitative education upon the ascension of the administration barely three years ago, had metamorphosed into the introduction of free school uniforms to pupils and students at all levels up to Senior Secondary three, free school feeding programme for pupils up to Primary Four in the elementary rung of the school ladder under the State of Osun Schools Free Feeding and Health Programme (O’ Meals) and had culminated into capital intensive programmes such as the State of Osun Schools Infrastructure Development Programme (O’ SCHOOLS) and the introduction of the broad-based jet-age instructional support package, the Tablet of Knowledge, known in our tongue as Opon Imo.
This is not to talk of other programmes like the Osun Schools Calisthenics and the drastic increase in the subvention and grants to our schools. Also in addition are the massive recruitment and selection / placement of qualified, competent and experienced teachers into the system. All the foregoing are undoubtedly laudable pluses for any administration anywhere, especially in the face of the present spate of rot and decay witnessed in the subsector in this part of the globe.
The most recent of all is the ongoing schools reclassification programme. For its relentless auspicious and invaluable efforts, the Government Unusual of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has become the envy of other states, especially the adjoining ones from which battalions of students cross daily to reap the benefits of good, sound academic and moral instruction. In spite of all these innovative intervention efforts which have so far impacted positive turnaround in the terrain of public education in the state, there still subsists a reasonably large cross section of people and residents, who are yet to see, recognize or appreciate the good works of the administration in the afore-mentioned regards.
Most unjustly and in-gratuitiously criticized of all these laudable programmes is the reclassification programme, which classifies our schools into Elementary, Middle and High schools. Concerning this policy, my personal take is that even in the highest heavens, the first law is order. The classification of schools as such is even in order with the reclassification earlier carried out by the Federal Government under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and other stakeholders.
Under the Federal Government reclassification, modifications were done to the 6-3-3-4 system of education which was introduced in 1987/88 academic session throughout the federation. The earlier modalities comprised for each child, six years of primary education (between the ages 6 and 11); three years of junior secondary education (ages 11 to 14); three years of senior secondary education (ages 14 to 17); and four years of tertiary education. In the schema presented above, the double three in between covers the whole range of the student’s secondary school career spanning six good years in all.
In the reclassification of the government at the centre, introduced in 2001/2002; and which hardly ever went beyond the demonstration stage, the six years of primary/ elementary education and the first three years of secondary education, called the junior secondary school years in the 6-3-3-4 system were joined together to form an expansive period of nine-year basic education; while the remaining three years of secondary education – the senior secondary years stand apart. As it proved, the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme presented a farce at the end of the day.
The stage at which the incumbent administration met the public institutions of education in the state was such that barely was up to 5 per cent of our secondary school leavers matriculable into any institution of higher learning. The performances of candidates of the state at public examinations; be it those of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) recorded below 2 per cent of credit passes in five subjects, with the inclusion of English and Mathematics. The situation was so terrible and abysmal that the state’s ranking among the comity of states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) numbering thirty seven in all was that of a laggard.
The state took the backward position in the thirties! Now that the Government Unusual of Ogbeni Aregbesola has in its wisdom resolved to fin lasting panacea to all lingering issues which had hitherto plagued the sub-sector, it would not only be wise and appropriate; but also complementary and supportive to give it free hand to approach the hydra-headed albatross confronting the industry head-on. In the new classification, the naming of education stages as Elementary, Middle and High schools is not entirely new.
What could be new are the positive approaches and strategies; and these are necessarily so. In the new classification, the first six years of early education of the child, called the Elementary stage, comprises children of ages spanning between 6 and 11 years. The Middle School entertains products of the Elementary schools for about three years, till they reach ages about 14 years; after which they proceed to the High school. At the highest, an average student is ready, armed with brilliant academic performances evidenced by good results to proceed to his choicest tertiary institution at the age of seventeen in the maximum.
The new classification, apart from removing the misfortune of bad results after the whole career of about twelve years; also seeks to make parents more alive and amenable to their God-assigned role by deemphasizing pre-primary education. In our days, pre-primary education was a complete rarity. Yet students who started solid primary education at the age of six or thereabouts coped effectively with the challenges of their sudden transition from home to school. (To Be Continued)

ANGLICAN COMMUNION 4

ANGLICAN COMMUNION 4Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Sunday made a passionate appeal to the Christian community across the country to return to the original basis of all faith which says “love thy neighbour as thy self”.
This was just as the governor, Saturday night, said those linking him to any plot against Christianity missed the point because the success his father had early in life could be traced to a job he got in the construction of the St. John’s Cathedral, Iloro, Ilesa; thereby making him one of the beneficiaries of the Christian faith.
Governor Aregbesola, while speaking at the St. Benedict Catholic Cathedral, Osogbo, presided over by Bishop Rev Paul Awowole, said no faith preached hatred.
It was a weekend of visits to churches and receptions for leaders of the Christian communities in Nigeria.
Aregbesola, who was in company with the immediate past Governor of Abia State, Uzor Orji Kalu, to St. Benedict Catholics Cathedral Osogbo, said one common thread runs through all religions from Babism; Christianity, Gnosticism, Islam, Sufi and Shia, Druze, Mandaeans and Sabians, Shabakism, Ayyavazhi, Buddhism, Din-i-Ilahi, Hinduism, Jainism, Meivazhi, Sikhi, Manichaeism, Mazdakism, Mithraism, Yazdânism, Zoroastrianism / Parsi, Confucianism, Shinto, Taoism, Indigenous traditional religions, Hellenistic, Uralic, Esotericism, Neopaganism, Syncretic or Shinshukyo which have love as the basis of the faiths.
Quoting copiously from the book of Matthew chapter 22 verse 39, the governor said Jesus Christ answered his Disciples and those around Him thus: “Love thy neighbour as thy self”, when he was asked, which was the greatest commandment. Jesus Christ would have distinguished between whom to love if He only means Christian loving themselves among their neighbour, he said.
“I must tell you that any time I have the opportunity of listening to the sermons of your priests and other Christian priests, what runs through my mind is the greatness of God because it is in His awesome greatness that there are differences we have in faiths.
“Behind and beyond those differences is one truth. What is the truth? God is love! God is truth and it is only those who serve God in truth and in love that would have would have His grace.
“The message I want to pass on today is that love is the cardinal principle of faith. When Jesus Christ was asked, which of the laws was the most important and sacred, he did not think twice before telling the Disciples and all around Him that one, is faith in the oneness and supremacy of the Almighty God and that closely followed that, is the golden rule which says you must ‘love your neighbour as thy self’.
“I asked myself everyday, were it to be that that neighbour must be a Catholic, Jesus Christ would have defined it, were it to be that that your neighbour would have to be a Christian, Jesus Christ would have described it.
“Jesus Christ didn’t say so. He said you must love your neighbour as yourself. Your neighbour could be an Animist, your neighbour could an Atheist, your neighbour could be a Gnostic, your neighbour could be a Muslim, your neighbour could be a Christian of different denominations.
“The requirement for Christ is our individual love for one another since God does not promised collective salvation.
“I share your own conviction about resurrection. My own faith promises resurrection, my own faith promises salvation. I wouldn’t go into the intricacies of it today, but I know when the bubble goes finally, I will be among the redeemed”, the governor said.
Bishop Awowole and former governor Orji Kalu lauded Aregbesola’s efforts towards revitalising all sectors of the state’s economy from roads development to new schools construction side by side public health care delivery system and job creation.
Earlier in the evening of Saturday, Aregbesola received Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) at the Government House.
Okoh, who came with four Bishops, commended Governor Aregbesola for the apparent sense of security in the state.
Okoh said there is peace in the state saying this must be due to the various development and empowerment policies of the current administration
“Since the coming of Ogbeni, he said, “there has been peace and security in the state.”
Aregbesola, who used the occasion of the courtesy visit to tell the story of his late father’s link to the Iloro Ilesa Church, said St. John’s Cathedral Iloro, Ilesa Church was the source of his father’s breakthrough.
He said those accusing him of Islamisation agenda missed the point because he as a Muslim, believe that each creation of God has the freedom to choose his faith.

Aregbesola, Kalu call for love among Nigerians

kalu-and-aregbesola

Osun state Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola and the former Governor of Abia state, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu have called on Nigerians to exhibit love among themselves for the country to move forward and for the dreams of its founding fathers to be realized.

Both Aregbesola and Kalu spoke at the Saint Benedict Catholic Church, Osogbo on Sunday when Aregbesola accompanied Kalu who was on a visit to the state to the church to worship.
Particularly, Kalu, a devout Catholic who spoke to the church congregation during the mass noted that love is lacking in the country, hence the slow pace of development in the country.
The former Governor who was accompanied to the church by Senator Emmanuel Onwe described Aregbesola as a humble politician who has contributed significantly to the development of the state and entire Yoruba nation.
He said “Aregbesola is a very humble politician and it’s not common to see such Politician with high level of humility like Aregbesola. He is a lesson in humility and his genuine love for the people has set Osun state on the world map today.”
Dr Kalu who also met with Igbo Catholics called on the people of the state to support Governor Aregbesola in his bid to develop the state and make it envy of others, stressing that governor Aregbesola has the acumen to lead the state to the Promised Land.
Speaking during the church service, Governor Aregbesola said his determination to develop the state was born out of his love for the people, stressing the need for Nigerian leaders to also exhibit great love for the followers.
Aregbesola who pledged to personally renovate the church also promised that his government would construct befitting roads that would lead to the church.
He said he was in the church to honour Dr Kalu, who he described as an elder statesman and a detribalized Nigerian who has contributed significantly to the growth of the country.

SONY DSC

SONY DSCAhead of the Osun State gubernatorial election scheduled for August, the Coordinator, Osun Movement for Peace, Comrade Temidayo Bankole, in this interview, talks on why well-meaning Osun indigenes must speak up against attempts to derail the current developmental momentum in the state to attain the Osun of their dreams.
Is your being in the news a strategy to make your organization ahead of the coming governorship election in the state?
We have been in the news for a while now, but it is wrong to conclude that our increased tempo of advocacy and media visibility is to achieve political or election-related goals. Osun Movement for Peace, OMP, is a non-political and non-governmental public advocacy cum civil society group. We are a part of the Civil Societies Coalition in the state. Our concern and purpose of existence since 2007 has been to defend the peace, unity and interest of our state.
In the last few months, attempts have been made by some irresponsible political elites to push the state to the precipice by misrepresenting the intentions of the state education policy. Our movement decided to intervene by organizing an education summit to douse tension.
Our objective has always been clear – we don’t want politicians to play politics with the future of Osun State, so we ask those who want to contest elections to go about it responsibly and not instigate our people against one another. Let issues that will determine elections in Osun State be as objective and development-focused as possible; not religion, ethnicity, thuggery or any other form of societal manipulation.
Well meaning indigenes and professional groups in Osun State must rise up and speak against all attempts aimed at derailing the current developmental momentum in the state. If you knew Osun five, ten years ago, and you see what is going on now in terms of visible positive transformation, you will want to pray that the state should never be returned to the era of the past. The least we all can do is to say no to vandalism and any form of manipulation that could turn the hand of the clock back.
Is this about working for the second term of the incumbent administration?
OMP is not working for any political party or contestant; rather, we are a watchdog for the well-being of Osun State. Go and check: we have never received any form of patronage from anybody or party within or outside the state and we have no intention of doing so.
There is nothing wrong if Osun people are impressed with what is happening in the state in the last couple of years and they want the person who is responsible for the transformation to continue. All we are saying is that let whoever will lead Osun assume the mandate of the people freely, fairly, peacefully and responsibly because we are decent, peace-loving people.
What role do you see your group playing in the build-up to the governorship election?
We will be playing the town-crier role by vehemently and ceaselessly drawing the attention of the whole world to any minute incident that could affect the peace of the state. We will also work with  like-minded interest groups to put together programmes that would serve as a strong platform for advancing the wish of the people of Osun for free, fair and peaceful election.
Now is the time for us to let the world know that our state is replete with pragmatic, intellectual and peace-loving people who are passionate about forging an alliance to promote the best interest and development of the ordinary people.
In terms of how prepared we are in mobilizing Osun citizens towards achieving peaceful, rancour-free elections, the truth is that majority of the people of Osun are wiser now because they have seen the transformation going on in the state. So, they are keying into the direction the state is going now and will definitely not precipitate crisis, rancour or any such unwholesome acts that may destroy the peace of the state.

OSUN, A Reference Point For Good Governance In Nigeria – Emmanuel Onwe

Emmanuel, Aregbeshola and Kalu

Emmanuel, Aregbeshola and Kalu
Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, speaking at the 15th edition of the fitness exercise of the State of Osun, tagged, “Walk to live” said that Aregbesola deserves a second term based on the performance and developmental projects being executed in the state.
Kalu explained that despite his leadership position in PDP, admitted that Aregbesola deserves a second term.
He said the massive transformation of the state points to the fact that Aregbesola has performed.
Kalu, who expressed satisfaction with the large crowd that followed Aregbesola, was a pointer to the fact that PDP will not, because of difference in political party, say the truth about the development he has seen in Osun.
Commercial activities was temporarily brought to a halt as people in their thousands snaked through major towns of Ife North state constituency for the 15th edition of the fitness exercise of the State of Osun tagged “Walk to live”.
As early as 8’0 clock in the morning residents and citizens trooped out from towns like Edun-abon, Moro, Yakooyo, to join the convoy of the state government led by Aregbesola in yhe company of Kalu.
The fitness exercise, a seven kilometer walk, climaxed at the Origbo Community Unity School in Ipetumodu, where members of the various towns joined officials of government and invitees to exercise and listen to address of the governor and well-wishers at the programme.
Kalu pointed out that he was drawn to Aregbesola for his sterling performance as the governor of Osun.
He commended Aregbesola for what he has done to lift Osun from the level he met it, saying such governor or individual needs the support of all and sundry irrespective of political differences.
According to him, “I am still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, but what I have heard and seen about your governor made me to come out in the open to support good work, Iyiola Omisore is personal friend of mine, but I will always say the truth.
“Few days that I have spent here and the way his people talked about him truly showed that Governor Aregbesola deserves another term to complete that good work that the Lord has used him to start during his first term.
He charged the people of the state to discountenance insinuation that Aregbesola wants to Islamise Osun, saying politicians are only at work to use Aregbesola’s strong faith in Islam to mislead people.
“I am a committed Catholic and I am sure that Aregbesola will follow me to my church, if he’s dropped and converted his Christians friend will it not be a futile exercise in a state, politician should stop bringing religion into politics”, the former governor stressed.
Speaking earlier former PDP senator representing Ebonyi Central, Emmanuel Onwe, commended Aregbesola for the developmental stride in Osun, stressing that Osun has become a reference point for good governance in Nigeria.

Developmenatal Programmes Will Be Evenly Distributed – Laoye-Tomori

The Government of the State of Osun has reinstated its commitment to making the best living condition available to people of the state irrespective of their social or economic status by ensuring that the series of developmental programmes currently going on across the state would be evenly distributed across the length and breadth of the state.
The state Deputy Governor, Mrs. Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, stated this in her remark while addressing participants at the flag off of a five-day Re-Orientation workshop organized for different categories of politicians in the state with the theme; Colloquium Phase One: Issues in Political Engagement, powered by The Knowledge Plaza and held at the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Osogbo.
Mrs. Laoye-Tomori, who acknowledged God’s love and mercies as the major reason for the sustenance of peaceful atmosphere that is currently being enjoyed by the people of the State of Osun since the commencement of the present Administration in the state three years ago, recalled the deplorable state of the state’s infrastructure coupled with the spate of economy disintegration at the birth of the
Aregbesola led administration in November 2010.
The state Deputy Governor, who condemned in its totality the high rate of youth unemployment in Nigeria, said the only visible means of providing lasting solution to the persistent civil unrest in the country together with increase insecurity challenge confronting the nation at present is for the government to devise better means of giving gainfully employing the teeming youths of the nation.
She said the government of Mr. Rauf Aregbesola in the State of Osun has performed creditably well in this regard by placing high priority on youth employment in the scheme of his government through various programmes like the OYES, O-REAL, O-BEEF and other sectors of the state adding that, the federal government and other state governments
across the nation should be committed to youths’ employment in their programmes saying Nigeria is blessed with an avalanche of energetic, vibrant and knowledgeable youths that could turn around the fortune of the country if given opportunity to express themselves.
Mrs. Laoye-Tomori also used the opportunity to appeal to members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and lovers of the party and administration of Governor Aregbesola to come out en-mass to re-elect the party in the forthcoming August 9 gubernatorial election in the State of Osun so as to allow Mr.
Aregbesola to complete all the ongoing people oriented programmes. Alluding to the good that lies ahead for the State of Osun in particular and Nigeria as a whole if APC could be elected in all the coming elections across the country, APC acting Chairman in the state, Elder Adebiyi Adelowo, enjoined party faithful not to renege on their loyalty to the party.
He said APC as a party will not disappoint them but will make good, its promises to them and continue with the provision of basic social amenities across the length and breadth of the state with a view to making life conducive to the good people of the State of Osun.
