gov_rauf-aregbesola1-351×185

gov_rauf-aregbesola1-351x185WITH the conclusion of the just held Osun State Governorship election, won by the incumbent, Rauf Aregbesola, I am of the humble opinion that now is the time everybody in the state irrespective of the real or perceived divides, to rally support for him so that all the far-reaching development programmes, on-going and the newly conceived ones by his administration, are quickly completed and delivered for the overall benefits and relief of all the people in the state.

Now is also the time to assist him not only to sustain the momentum with which he started governance built around the people; which has endeared him to them, but to raise the gear for higher outputs.

Indeed, anything is possible if we have faith, the will and joyful hearts. I know we all have the will to play our parts in this campaign for accelerated development in Osun State. I know we have faith in the present regime and we have the hearts to face the challenges ahead. Our people are urged to support this administration’s laudable programmes of economic reconstruction, social justice, unity and religious tolerance, that will guarantee our present happiness and future prosperity.

The cause of Aregbesola’s regime is the cause of the common people and the less privileged members of our society-the villagers, the labourers, the farmers and those millions of unemployed. It is a cause that compels our serious attention and commitment.

What is therefore left for us as a people of Osun State, is to make a pledge from now on that we will bury all our differences and come out fully to consolidate on the achievements of Ogbeni Aregbesola.

Let the politicians pledge, that they will not misuse the trust and responsibility, thrust on them by our people. Let them pledge, that they will speak for those who have no voice, and to remember those who are forgotten. Let them pledge that they will love us as themselves and that looting of public treasuries will not be their preoccupations.

The challenges for the electorates are to give voices and votes to people of integrity and for those fundamental democratic principles of human freedom, free economic enterprises, self-respect and accountability.

Indeed, Aregbesola’s regime has offered us new hope. New hope of gainful employment and self-respect for those thousands of our school-leavers; graduates-skilled and unskilled through O’YES. New hope of economic recovery, through the dedicated pursuit of individualistic and collective approach to agrarian revolution and small-scale industrialization in the state through O’REAP. New hope of good quality of life for the rural populace through the faithful execution of populist-oriented programmes, like the DAGBOLU scheme, through O’HUB.

Socially, we must build bridges of understanding. And economically, we must narrow the wide gap between the rich and the poor, if we want peace and stability in this country. Indeed, we stand at a great turning point, when Osun State and indeed Nigeria is looking for a new direction, through a second term for Aregbesola and an APC federally controlled government.

A time like this calls for leadership like Aregbesola that can set a firm focus and positive vision for the future and rally the people of Osun behind it. We thank God that at this point in time in Osun State; we have such a leader in the person of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. Let me commend all his good efforts toward ensuring progress in the state since he took charge. However, the governor himself must continue to reinforce the attributes of good leadership with which he is already identified and make more use of homegrown people to man key positions in his second term in office.

The school merger programme by the government should be vigorously pursued, possibly with modifications. The structures being put in place are of world standard and a legacy that will outlive Aregbesola. I am impressed, that the various sites demolished are now been beautified with walkways. Definitely, we need to embrace modernity in all aspects of our life, though no changes come about without temporary pains. Only change is permanent.

Aregbesola’s government has been listening not only to the clamorous voices of the privileged few and the opportunists at the corridor of power, but also the hardly audible voices of the proverbial silent majority.

The governor has declared that his administration does not presume to have a monopoly of knowledge. He has brought ‘dissenters’ into policy discussions, rather than freeze them out. He has invited constructive criticism, because he believes the critics have a right to be heard. We should realize that the lamps of enlightenment are lit by the spark of controversy and that their flame can be snuffed out by the blanket of consensus.

In this regard, we must concede, that out experience in this state between 2003 to 2010 was not particularly edifying. We saw hatred and sorrow on our faces waiting for love and happiness. We saw families divided against themselves, waiting to be brought together again. To find answers to all these unwholesome acts, we must look within ourselves. Let us forget the past and come together to build this state, for nobody else can do it for us because it belongs to all of us. We must close all sullen pages and open a new chapter.

Let us give unalloyed support to Ogbeni Aregbesola, so that those who were left out in the cold in those years of inaction, could be accommodated for positive contributions. Let us know that we cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another; until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices.

Let us remember that if we succeed, generations to come will say of us now living, that we mastered our moment. That we helped to make Osun safe and prosperous to live in. This is our summon to greatness. Let us pray that strength and courage abundant be given to us; that the good that lies in each of our hearts may day by day be magnified. That we may come to see more clearly not what divides us, but that which unites us. That the true spirit of this time – its joy, its hopes and above all its binding faith may live among us. Osun State must always be many steps ahead of others.

We must build a virile state and improve the standard of living of our people, because the worth of a nation is the worth of the men and women in it. We must not lose hope, for in ashes there can still be spark. For as the passage in one of the Shakespeare works put it “there is a tide in the affairs of men which taken in time leads to good fortune.” We must not allow this golden opportunity to slip by.

We thank God that August 9th governorship election was devoid of violence and acrimony in whatever form. We should know that our leaders could only govern over the living. All political parties in Osun should come together and join hands with the Aregbesola’s administration. For there is no victor, no vanquished. The victory is larger than Aregbesola, it belongs to the people of Osun State, irrespective of political parties.

Aregbesola is working, Osun is progressing. For Aregbesola and the people of Osun State, It is a goal scored in a grand style, after an epic and protracted play against concerted forces of fate.

Olumide Lawal, wrote from Ede, Osun State.

Farm input – 1b

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Wale Adedoyin, stated this in Osogbo during a meeting with members of farm settlers across the state.

He said the present administration will continue to support farmers by providing necessary farm inputs and agricultural facilities such as fertilisers, seedlings, chemicals and others at subsidised rates.

He added that the government has also reduced land use fees to one thousand naira, which will due after 24 years for arable crops and 49 years for cash crops, stressing that the agreement is renewable after the specified years of use.

The Agric commissioner however implored the farm settlers to henceforth ignore any issue that come to them without the authority of his ministry.

In his address, the Director of Agricultural Services, Mr. Kola Ajisekola, enjoined all farm settlers to keep on abiding by the state government agricultural policy so as to continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy which the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola will continue to deliver.

coat of arms

coat of armsOsun State government has allayed the fear by some civil servants that they may be victimised or punished after Governor Rauf Aregbesola has secured his second term in office.

The State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Olubukola Oyawoye, assured that no one would be victmised on the pattern of voting at the recently concluded governorship election in the state.

Addressing the staff of her ministry during a thanksgiving service, Oyawoye maintained that no indigene of the state, irrespective of their political interests, will be victimised or punished for their roles in the last election.

According to her, “Since it is not in the character of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to punish, not to talk of victimising anyone, no government staff should entertain any fear, no matter how related or close to any party or interest group in the election”.

She added that since the people of the state voted massively to re-elect Aregbesola for the second term, it is incumbent on all citizens, regardless of political interest, to cooperate with government, to take the state to greater heights.

In the same vein, the Special Adviser on Environment and Sanitation, Bola Ilori, at the occasion, said that Aregbesola’s government will not run a winner-takes-all government,  but will be of benefit to all.

Jubilation-Pix-on-Gov-Election-7-300×169

Jubilation-Pix-on-Gov-Election-7-300x169Fifteen aggrieved persons who were allegedly harassed and humiliated by security operatives during the August 9 governorship election in Osun State have concluded arrangements to challenge the alleged inhuman treatment in a court of law.
The complainants are High Chief Sola Ogunsanya, Isaac Onajide, Babatola Segun, Ogungbangbe Suliman, Obayemi Ayo, Awopetu Odunayo, Esther Olamijulo and eight others.
Those to be sued include the Department of State Security Services (SSS), Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their alleged complicity in the complaints of illegal arrest and detention.
The complainants, in an application for a court order enforcing their Fundamental Right, slated to be filed at a Federal High Court in Osogbo today, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Osogbo, demanded compensation and unreserved apology from the security operatives.
In the application, they stated that “We pray for an order directing the respondents to pay N100,000,000 each as damages and tender public apology to each of us.”
“Our arrest and detention prevented us from exercising our franchise in the August 9 poll and vote for candidates of our choice”.
They also prayed the court to declare that their arrest and manhandling by officers of the respondents constitute a violation of their freedom from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment.
The applicants, however, sought these reliefs as contained in an originating summons pursuant to Section 34, 35 and 46 of the 1999 constitution and Article 5, 6, 12, 13 and 20 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, Cap A9 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004; Order II Rule 1, 2 and 3 of the Fundamental Right (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, 2009.
The applicants in the first relief are seeking the declaration of the court that their arrest and detention was unconstitutional, illegal, null and void and in violation of their right to personal liberty.
In an affidavit he sworn to, in support of the application, one of the applicants, High Chief Sola Ogunsanya, a registered voter said: “I was arrested on August 8 by armed officers of the respondents in my house, while other detainees were arrested on August 9 at Iloko-Ijesa and Ijebu-jesa.”
He stated that “after the arrest, myself, and two other applicants were taken to the DSS office in Osogbo and Iloko police post where we were detained, stripped naked and ordered to lie down for several hours in the open without allowing us to move an inch and later beaten, tortured and humiliated”.

fgFifteen days after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the August 9 Osun State governorship election, the election petition tribunal, has declared that it has not received petition from any of the political parties.

The Secretary of the Osun State governorship election tribunal, Mr. Adamu Mohammed Aliyu, weekend told Vanguard that the candidates, however still had seven days to file their petitions.

The main opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and its candidate in the election, Senator Iyiola Omisore, had after the announcement of the results, hinted of their intention to appeal the results, claiming the election was fraught with irregularities.

Aliyu, who hinted that some politicians had inquired if the tribunal had been opened, declared that “no political party has filed any petition so far.”

The election was keenly contested by 20 political parties.

Aliyu disclosed that the tribunal had been constituted before the August 9 election in compliance with electoral law.

Quoting Section 133 (3) of the Electoral Act, Aliyu said, “according to the law, election tribunals shall be constituted not later than 14 days before the election, and that has been complied with by the president of the court of Appeal.”

Traditional-Religious-Worshippers-in-Osun-StateDespite directives from the government of the state of Osun, asking tourists from outside Osogbo township to keep away from this year Osun Osogbo Festival as precautionary measures to check spread of Ebola virus, the festival recorded an impressive turnout of tourists.
But the state government said it has anticipated this outcome and had put in place medical facilities to screen the multitude before they are allowed into the Osun grove.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Rauf Aregbesola at the occasion, the Special Adviser to the Osun State governor, on Culture, Arts and Tourism, Mr. Ladi Soyode said the government only tried to stop people from coming to the Festival in order to prevent the spread of Ebola virus in the State.
“We wanted to limit human contacts as well as prevent contaminating the river”
He said despite the government’s warning, people still trooped out in large numbers to participate in the annual festival, which is over 600 years old.

Femi-Falana4

Femi-Falana4Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria in this interview reviews the outcome of the August 9, 2014 governorship election in Osun State
You predicted that Governor Rauf Aregbesola was going to win and he won. What gave you that confidence?

One didn’t have to be a futurologist to know that Governor Rauf Aregbesola was going to win the election. He is generally acknowledged to have taken governance very seriously. Having been involved in popular struggles, he has had no difficulty in connecting with the grass roots. Through his people-centred policies he has formed an organic link with the masses. In spite of the limited resources of Osun, Ogbeni Aregbesola is trying to address the crisis of poverty and underdevelopment. Through the social security scheme, the government pays N10, 000 monthly stipend to the elderly and unemployed youths numbering about 20, 000. The school feeding programme, the ‘Opon Imo’ (tablet of knowledge) revolution, the establishment of a textile factory for sewing school uniforms and other programmes have impacted positively on the people. Mind you, the government has also constructed thousands of kilometres of roads. The fact that he had endeared himself to the people was the basis of my confidence.

What did Aregbesola do that Governor Kayode Fayemi did not do?

Frankly speaking I would not know. With respect, the All Progressives Congress should be held vicariously liable for Fayemi’s electoral defeat in Ekiti State. He is a victim of the ideological crisis of the party. Did the party arm its governors with any pragramme or code of ethics? The APC claims to be an offshoot of the Unity Party of Nigeria and the Peoples Redemption Party of the Second Republic. Both parties ensured access to education, health, employment, abolished oppressive taxes which enhanced the quality of the lives of the people. Today, the APC has, like the Peoples Democratic Party, priced education and health out of the reach of the poor. The traffic control agencies in the APC-controlled states extort money from motorists like the Nigeria Police Force. The APC is seriously defending the dubious rein of market fundamentalism. It believes in the commercialisation of education and health and the privatisation of public assets. Even in the United States, the bastion of capitalism, the poor are housed by the state while their children can access education. The main crisis in the US Congress pertains to Obamacare which has to do with access to health for 47 million Americans who had no health insurance. Here, Nigerians are told that the government cannot fund schools, fund hospitals, construct roads, supply water etc. Nigerians have to pay through their noses for all social services including epileptic power supply. If civil servants cannot educate their children, feed their family and live a reasonably decent life then the government has failed. But due to his socialist background Aregbesola has extricated himself from the crisis of ideological confusion associated with the APC. He is convinced that the national economy should never be handed over to market forces. For me, that is the basis of his electoral victory.

Some people said that the outcome of the Osun election must have surprised the people of Ekiti State. Do you agree?

They were certainly surprised that Aregbesola successfully mobilised the Osun people to resist the fascist onslaught. Whereas 36,790 troops were deployed for the Ekiti State governorship election the figure rose to 73,000 in Osun State. Some of the armed goons were gendarmes who wore masks. Whereas in Ekiti State 40 APC members were arrested, over 700 APC supporters were railroaded to detention in Osun State. I had to intervene to secure the release of an 80-year-old lawyer. But others, including Osun Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wale Afolabi, were released after the election. But at the end of the day the militarisation and monetisation of the electoral process compelled the people to defend their votes.

But his opponent rattled him? Don’t you agree?

I do not agree with you. Aregbesola spoke to me when the undue delay in the announcement of the results of the election caused so much tension and anxiety. Given the support of the people, he was on top of the situation. But the Independent National Electoral Commission refused to collaborate with the anti-democratic forces, who were hell-bent on truncating the electoral process.

Some people said the outcome was an indication that Aregebsola was beatable after all?

That position is misleading. It was not a free and fair election. Election observers were chased away while many party agents were beaten up by security forces and thugs to pave way for the writing of results for the PDP in certain areas. Even when it was confirmed that Aregbesola had beaten his closest rival by over 100,000 votes Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode announced that the PDP was coasting to victory. With the arrest of 700 people and the intimidation of others including a former governor, commissioners and legislators belonging to the APC, Governor Aregbesola snatched victory from the jaws of the lion.

Did the arrest and detention of APC leaders work against the APC and in favour of the PDP?

For sure, the wave of arrests was designed to manipulate the election in favour of the PDP. But it was a wrong calculation. Aregbesola mobilised the people and so they trooped out to vote. And when the returning officer had problems with the announcement of the results, the voters surrounded the INEC office at Osogbo. At that juncture the security forces pitched their tent with the people.

Can you please justify this?

The Federal Government did not hide its plan to engage in the militarisation of the election in Osun State. But I was so sure that no amount of militarisation or monetisation of the electoral process would make the PDP defeat Aregbesola at the poll.

Do you think that if the likes of former governors Isiaka Adeleke and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola did not defect from the PDP to the APC, Iyiola Omisore could have won?

With respect to ex-governors Oyinlola and Adeleke, I do not concern myself with the effect of the defection of political heavyweights. I prefer to de-emphasise personalities and concentrate on the programmes of political parties or their candidates. Adeleke was intimidated and prevented from casting his vote. Oyinlola was reported to have lost his polling unit to the PDP. It was the same story in Ekiti State where Segun Oni lost his unit to the PDP. In an enlightened environment voters do not take dictation from leaders.

What did you think made Omisore lose the election?

The PDP erroneously believed that it was the militarisation of the election that led to its victory in Ekiti State. So, it increased the number of troops deployed for the governorship election in Osun State. But Aregbesola drew sufficient lessons from Ekiti and mobilised the Osun people to defend their votes. Owing to his organic link with the masses, they were prepared to make the necessary and even risky sacrifice to have him re-elected. In terms of integrity, consistency, pedigree, education and principle, Otunba Omisore could not match Ogbeni Aregbesola. That was why he lost the election.

Does he have any case at the tribunal?

Neither Senator Omisore nor the PDP has filed any petition at the election petition tribunal.

Do you think his arrest and trial over the killing of Chief Bola Ige worked against him?

I would not know. But the statement credited to Oyinlola at the last rally of the APC to the effect that all those who were detained at the Agodi prisons over the killing of Ige had become the leaders of the PDP in Osun State was so weighty that it might have assisted some voters to make up their minds.

Would you say that the security agencies were partial during the election?

In Osun State, Lai Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC was arrested. We have just been informed that he was arrested for wandering. But the vagrancy law was abolished in 1986. If Mohammed was arrested on the road, Mr. Nasir el-Rufai, another APC leader, was arrested in his hotel room during the Anambra State governorship election last year. Was Nasir also arrested for wandering? To confirm the partiality of the security forces, some PDP leaders from Anambra, Lagos, Ogun and Ekiti states were in Osun State during the election. They had platoons of military and police personnel guiding them. Nobody declared any of them a persona non grata.

Can you defend this?

The issue goes beyond the partiality of the armed forces. My position is that soldiers have no role to play in the conduct of elections. It is the constitutional duty of the police to maintain law and order during elections. Even the Department of State Service is an undercover security apparatus to gather intelligence, detect crimes and pass information to the police. I am saying without any fear of contradiction that no law in Nigeria allows any security man to wear masks. That was the first time in the history of Nigeria that masked security operatives were involved in elections. Beyond the condemnation of the partisan stand of the Armed Forces, the Nigerian people should insist that each security agency is restricted to its jurisdiction.

Don’t you think that the percentage of votes got by the PDP was an indication that the party is gaining ground in the state and the South-West?

Since there is no clearly marked ideological difference between the APC and the PDP the latter is likely to continue to make inroads in the country. It is a challenge for all Nigerians who are committed to genuine social change to come together, unite and intervene decisively in mobilising Nigerians to take their political destiny in their own hands. Instead of rejecting the APC for the PDP, the Nigerian people should be presented with a credible alternative political platform. With its defeat in Osun State the PDP ought to know that naked power through militarisation will not win the general election.

Will the number of votes secured by Omisore not be a boost for the ruling party in the presidential election?

It is not likely to be a boost for the ruling party. Nigerians owe themselves a duty to make the 2015 general election issue based.

What advice do you have for Aregbesola?

Understandably, the expectations of the people are high. Aregbesola has to redouble his efforts. He has to free the economy of the state from the tight grip of contractors by reorganising the state ministry of works to construct and maintain roads. The ministry has more qualified engineers than most of the firms that handle road projects. Some of the roads constructed by the Public Works Department under the Chief Obafemi Awolowo government are stronger than the new roads. Some of the roads are still plied in the rural areas. With a ministry of housing, the government does not need to build housing units through contractors. The health personnel in the ministry of health, the trained teachers in the ministry of education, the agric experts in the ministry of agriculture who are not productive in the public service should be deployed in the communities to make them productive. Through such revolutionary  measures you conserve funds for development. During elections it is the people that will vote and not contractors.

Osun-Osogbo-event-Saidat-620×350

Osun-Osogbo-event-Saidat-620x350The grand finale of the annual Osun Osogbo festival was on Friday marked in low key, as part of the efforts to curtail the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus disease.

It will be recalled that few days to yesterday’s celebration, the Osun State government had invited stakeholders, including the traditionalists, the Osun devotees and worshippers to advise them to reduce the scope of the event because of the fear of the spread of Ebola.

The government said it would introduce a crowd control measure and also restrict people from outside the state from participating in the festival.

This year, the usual pomp and pageantry associated with the traditional festival was avoided, as only the Osun devotees and traditionalists from within the state took part in all the programmes of the festival.

However, all traditional rites associated with the festival were carried out under the supervision of the renowned Ifa priests, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon.

Also, a cross-section of medical experts in the state had called for the postponement of the festival to avoid the spread of Ebola virus to the state.

But, the Osun Osogbo 2014 advisory committee insisted that the festival would hold at the scheduled date in accordance with the tradition and culture of Osogbo land.

However, Osun devotees who went to the groove yesterday went through serious medical scrutiny as medical experts stationed at the main entrance of the groove performed series of tests on the devotees.

Vehicles are not allowed beyond the major entrance of the groove while occupants of such vehicles were made to come down for screening and allow in one after the other.

The medical team of about 80 health personnel led by the Director, Primary Health Care and Disease Control in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Kayode Ogunniyi, said 200 infra red thermometers were supplied by the state government for screening people before entering into the groove.

According to him: “more than 600 people had been screened around 12.30 pm.”

He disclosed that there was no record of anyone testing positive to the devise, saying the focus of the health workers were on those who appear sick and weak.

The health workers and security operatives at the event were wearing gloves to protect themselves from contacts with people in the crowd.

It was gathered that the security operatives arrested a middle aged man at the groove for allegedly carrying arms.

Speaking at the festival, the Director General, Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbalefo expressed the readiness of the Federal Government to develop all tourist centres across the country.

She said the Federal Government would ensure that the Osun Groove was developed to attract foreign tourists.

However, despite the restriction order by the state government, some Osun worshippers still came from from many states to participate in the celebration.

Among whom were the Lagos- based Mr. Adeola Oshuniyi, who has been attending the festival for the past 40 years ago and Mrs. Abosede Modinatu-Ojo, a arts theatre practitioner.

They said they could not afford to miss the festival urging people to be conscious of the disease.

The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun thanked the state government, worshippers of Osun and people of the state for their efforts towards ensuring the success of the celebration.

In attendance were the representatives of the Federal Government, Mrs. Sally Mbani for who is the Chairman of the Nigeria Tourism Development corporation as well as representative of the Osun state Government.

martelo-tribunal-03-600ph

martelo-tribunal-03-600phThe Nigeria Police, Osun command has arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate Court a 22 year old man, Aladegolu Victor, for parading himself as an officer of the police and DSS during the just concluded governorship election in Osun.

Also arraigned by the Police was a former Chairman of Ilesa West Local Government, Mr. Ibukun Fadipe who is believed to be notorious for attacks on members of the All Progressives Congress in the local government area.

Although Fadipe has been accused of being behind various attacks on APC members in the area, he was on Thursday arraigned over a case of attack on some people in Ilesa in 2009.

The fake DSS man, Aladegolu victor, who was arrested in Ile Ife on the 9th of August 2014, pleaded guilty to the two-count charges brought against him by the Commissioner of Police.

‎According to the charge sheet, the accused in company of others now at large presented themselves as personnel of Directorate of State Security (DSS) at a polling unit in Ile-Ife City Hall area.

The suspect and others at large committed offence on Saturday August 9, 2014 at Ile-Ife at about 12:05pm terrorising members of the public, adding that the offence is contrary and punishable under section 517 of the state criminal law 2003.

The suspect and others were alleged to be wearing black T-shirts with the inscription “Police” in the front and “DSS” behind”.

It added that the suspect committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 109 of the State Penal Code.

Barrister Biodun Badiora , while announcing his appearance said the Attorney General of the state is taking over the matter from the police to ensure diligent prosecution.

Defence Counsel Barrister Nnenna  Ngwu did not object to the application by the state to take over prosecution from the Police, stating that the court has been saved the rigour of stretched trial with the suspect pleading guilty to the two-count charges against him.

In rejecting the bail application for the suspect, Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Olusola Aluko, urged defence counsel to apply for bail formally.

He also ordered that the accused person be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter till September 12, 2014 for hearing.

It would be recalled that the suspect formerly held in Police custody before the poll, was initially released by Police but later re-arrested.

Both the State Government of Osun and the State chapter of the All Progressives Congress had before and during the election raised the alarm over the presence of hoodlums impersonating men of the Nigerian Army, the Police, DSS and other security agencies.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Atahiru Jega, just on Wednesday confirmed that the Osun election was nearly rigged condemnining the presence of hooded security agents as well.

The former chairman, Ilesa West Local Government, who appeared before Chief Magistrate A.O Ijiyode, was accused of assaulting one Alhaja Mulikat Odeyemi, and others as well as damaging the speakers and engine of Isokun Social Elite Club in Ilesa on 28th May 2009.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The accused Lawyer, Barrister Oluwaseun Ajoba urged the court to dismiss the case as all the complainants who were victims of the assault were in court saying they had withdrawn the case long time.

the prosecuting counsel, promise Akanwa however opposed the move as he said the proper procedure was for the counsel to apply forbail.

After much argument, Counsel to the accused, pleaded for bail  saying the accused could not jump bail as he was the immediate past chairman of Ilesa West Local Government Area.

Barrister Ajoba also argued that all the complainants who were direct victims of the assault case could stand as surety for the accused.

Chief Magistrate Ijiyode thereafter granted the accused bail in the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira and two sureties who must be resident in Ilesa.

coat of arms

coat of armsOsun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has reiterated that his government will continue to create opportunities for the youths in a bid to banish unemployment and make the state economically stable.

The governor stated this while receiving the 31 young engineers from the state who were sponsored by the state government to Germany for mechatronics training.

The foreign training, it would be recalled, was aimed at making them to be self-employed or taking charge of the Bola Ige Mechatronics Institute, Esa-Oke.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olumuyiwa Ige, “20 people were given the opportunity at the initial stage but later  increased the figure to 31”.
