AREGBESOLA AND RESTRUCTURING OF OSUN PUBLIC EDUCATION.

The age long adage says that when a handshake goes beyond the elbow, then it is no longer a handshake and one must prepare for a fight. This statement best explains the relationship between the governor of the state of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola and his friends and admirers from the Baptists Church in Nigeria on one hand and the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) Osun Chapter on the other. It is hoped that the spirit of Christmas will reunite the once cordial friends who fell apart following the ongoing reclassification of schools in the state. The restructuring has not gone down well with the Baptists Church in Nigeria and it has punctured their hither to robust relationship.
It will be recalled that in April 2013 during the Baptist National Centenary Convention in Osogbo that Governor Aregbesola was the guest of honour. Prior to the convention, the Baptist Church had approached the governor for financial aid and were given the sum of N25 million as well as 3 acres of land to use as convention ground. The governor also facilitated the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) by directing the Commissioner for Lands, Arc Muyiwa Ige to prepare and hand over the the C of O to the Baptists. As a matter of fact, the governor did not leave the convention ground until the documents were expressly prepared, signed and handed over to the Baptists. This action of the governor was more than a miracle to the leaders and laities.  The whole convention ground erupted in ecstasy. The convention ground was charged with the shout of praise to God and commendation to a Muslim governor that gave the Baptists all their requests.
Aregbesola who commended the Baptists national convention for choosing Osun as venue of their centenary celebration had observed that, “your intervention in education at the primary, secondary and University- Bowen University at Iwo is undisputed. The first generation of the parents in Osun benefited from the Baptist education. The hand of God is in this state and that is why your presence here is welcome.” He further told the congregation that “it is religion and moral values that keep the society together.”
The President of the Baptist convention, Rev. Dr. Ayokunle was more than happy with the governor for his unusual generosity and hospitality and thereafter, pronounced the ‘baptismal’ name of the Osun governor to be “Rueben” as he thanked the governor for his financial and moral support given to them.
However, Governor Aregbesola preferred the name Nathaniel to Rueben. Quoting the Gospel of John1:47, where Jesus Christ said “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile”, the governor said religion will have no meaning if people do not know we are representative of God on earth, arguing that religion means love harmony, oneness with your maker.
As 2013 is about to end, the Baptists leaders had forgotten that Aregbesola did not just prefer Nathaniel as a name but share all that characteristics of the Biblical Nathaniel. Aregbesola believes that the purpose of man on earth is to serve God and render services to fellow being in whatever position he finds himself.
The Baptists have also forgotten the message of Nathaniel Aregbesola on the purpose of religion which he claimed was for us to live in love and harmony. Today, Rauf ‘Nathaniel’ Aregbesola is seen as a man on the course of Islamising the State of Osun.
But Governor Aregbesola can be likened to Cassius Clay who later became Muhammed Ali. Ali got pleasure in being different, most of all he liked being himself. He refused to fight in conventional way. A boxer usually keeps his gloves up towards his head and upper body, ready to parry a blow. Ali likes to keep his hands low, apparently inviting attack- but he is quicker than other boxers, and the best way to lure the opponent’s chin just close enough for Ali to snap a jab, by lowering his hands. Ali’s unconventional tactics defeated Sonny Liston twice, forced Joe Frasier to kiss the canvass in Kinshasa at-“the rumble in the Jungle” fight.
Nathaniel Aregbesola, a Muslim gave them money to complete Christian convention ground, nobody accused him of religious bigotry,   when the C of O was issued in an unconventional manner, and he was celebrated as the Nathaniel on who is no guile. When Iwo Baptist High school was chosen as one of the model schools to be built at the cost of N1.3billion, the governor was on the good book of the Baptist Church. How come that the goods that Aregbesola have done not only to the Baptists but to the Catholic and Methodists were suddenly forgotten under six months only to be labeled a jihadist. If Baptists were in trance, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) cannot fall in to the same trance. Earlier in the year the Christian Association of Nigeria Osun chapter sought and gotten approval for a sum of N10 million for their secretariat from the same government they now accuse of islamisation.
The composition of the state executive is biased towards the Muslims. Out of the 34 members, the Christian members are 22, the legislators too comprises of 2/3 Christian members. The majority of the judicial members are Christians.
In Yoruba land, the people don’t fight over religion, this is because there is no community in the South West that has a mono religion; our secularism in Yoruba land allow husband and wife to belong to different religion without any trouble. Two of our governors in the South West even though practicing Muslims are married to Christians.
The bitter truth is that all public schools belong to the government since the promulgation of September 1975 decree that gave the power of ownership of schools to the government. If there is any state in the Federation that may return schools to the missionaries out of kindness, such gesture must not be abused, this is because if such gesture is challenged in the court the plaintiff stand to win. This is due to the supremacy of the Laws of the Federation over that of the states
The names of these schools merely reminded us that they were once established by the former owners. If we look at the Tenancy Law in Nigeria when an individual abandon its property for 12 years without collecting any rent it loses its property to the occupier, if on the other hand, it affect individual and the state the forfeiture take place after 20 years. So, the schools that the government have taken over for the past 35 years, is there any law that can support the repossession?
As we celebrate the Christmas, we must remember the love of Christ that is peace personify, we must adhere to Apostle Paul message that says in Romans 12 verse 18 “if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men,” the same Paul further stated “in 1Timothy 2 verses 1-2 “ I exhort therefore, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may live lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
If we all adhere to the biblical teaching as we enter the New Year and leave politics for politicians, more souls will be won for Christ and the glory of the Lord will be seen in our lives.

2014: RETURN AREGBESOLA, BENEFICIARIES OF FREE RAIL SERVICES URGE OSUN PEOPLE

Beneficiaries of the free rail service provided by the government of the state of Osun for the Christmas celebration from Lagos to Osogbo have called on the people of the state to ensure that Governor Rauf Aregbesola is returned as the governor of the state in next year’s election.
The call was made over the weekend by the beneficiaries who expressed their belief that the various masses- friendly policies and programme will be enduring as long as Governor Aregbesola remains the governor of the state.
The continued gesture by the Aregbesola’s administration is to accord more people the opportunity to celebrate the Yuletide with their families, friends and relatives in their places of origin particularly in the state of Osun thus, boosting its economy.
The most conspicuous thing at the Iddo Railway Terminus in Lagos was the trooping in of the scores of people who came to enjoy the free rail service provided on the bill of the state government of Osun which has become a ritual during festive periods.
As early as seven o’clock in the morning, the people began to gather at the train station to join the train which took off in Lagos at about twenty minutes after ten en route Osogbo.
With no discrimination in age, sex, tribal, state or political affiliation, people who are going to other states before and even beyond Osun, like Ogun, Oyo, kwara and Niger are among the beneficiaries.
Describing the initiative of Governor Aregbesola on the free rail service as a rare opportunity which had eluded the masses in the past, a resident of Iju in Lagos, Mr Jamiu Adesunkanmi and a resident of Ikorodu who is heading to Kwara state, Mr. Fatai Olasunkanmi said, they will be forever grateful to the governor for the opportunity.
They both encourage Governor Aregbesola to keep the flag flying by continuing with the good gesture and also implored him to encourage other governors in Nigeria to emulate the move.
Commenting on the gesture, a native of Osogbo who resides in Ojota, Lagos, Mrs Bolanle Ayoola who is a buisness woman in Lagos expressed the belief that the free rail service is one out of a million people-friendly programmes embarked upon by the Aregbesola’s administration and should be appreciated by the beneficiaries while Miss Comfort Ojo described the governor as an achiever.
A resident of Agege, Kazeem Karimu a student whose destination was Ibadan and Mr.Bisi Jimoh whose destination was Abeokuta were of the opinion that the benefit of the rail service, apart from being free, include safety which is devoid of traffic log-jam, is among other crucial areas which places rail above road transportation, therefore they commended the government for providing the alternative.
They expressed confidence that, the service which was not the first time has come to stay, just as they thanked the Governor for always identifying with the masses through his various policies and programme.
Also expressing gratitude to the Governor was Miss Nafisat Kolawole who said the free rail service has afforded her the opportunity of coming down to Oshogb to see her parents whom according to her she saw seven years ago due to lack of transport fair stressing that she got the information from a friend recently that the government of Osun always organise free rail service during festive periods which prompted her to take advantage.
The general feeling and expression on the faces of all the beneficiaries was that of excitement and joy to the extent that some of them started rendering prayers for the Governor whom they described as God sent to the people of Osun and Nigerians as a whole noting that majority of the interventions of the Governor are not going to be enjoyed by the people of the state of Osun alone.
It was a massive crowd of people who have been waiting for the rail in the rail terminus where it stopped to pick people who rushed in eagerly at terminus such as Sogunle, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, Ijoko, Abeokuta, Ibadan and Ede.

INTERVIEW: Why Omoluabi Public Offering Opens, Closes Same Day

wale bolorunduro

Dr. Wale Bolorunduro, is the Osun State Commissioner for Finance and is also the Chairman, Board of Directors of Omoluabi Savings and Loans.

In a group interview with newsmen in Osogbo shortly after the Completion Board Meeting of the company, he spoke on the offer targeted at increasing the company’s share capital by N1.65 billion.

Here are excerpts.

As the chairman of Omoluabi Savings and Loans limited, the Public Offering is opening today and closes today why?
The offer is not opening today but opening on 27th of December and closes the same day. The reason why we have to do that is that the Central Bank of (CBN) Nigeria requires Omoluabi Savings and Loans limited to have completed its capital raising above one billion naira to take it to N2.5 billion.
So, by doing this offering, we would be able to raise N1.6 billion, Omoluabi Savings and Loans will be above minimum capital requirement of any mortgage banks to continue to operate under Central Bank of Nigeria.
We believe that Omoluabi Savings and Loans is the asset and inheritance of the people of Osun and that is why we are opening this opportunity to Osun indigene to be co-owner of Omoluabi Savings and Loan.
Before the completion of the board meeting of today, the share of the company is purely owned by the state government and the local government, but now, the state and the local government will continue to own their share while the indigenes of the State will from henceforth own their share because there is an opportunity for all. By law, current Directors of the company are not allowed. It is basically for the workers of Osun State and government is trying to help the workers to buy part of the shares. What will happen now is that, the shares are going to be exposed to market discipline.
We believe this is another landmark achievement for the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and to also show to the world that Ogbeni is not just a Governor but a Governor of the people and a Governor that thinks of opportunity for his people. So, the people of the state are to own shares of Omoluabi Savings and Loan and on a yearly basis collect dividends. So, it is also an investment opportunity created by Aregbesola, for us and for the country.
The offer is significant because for some time, there has not been any Public Offering in Nigeria. So, this is the first in five years. The capital market we could say was sleeping and Osun has set to wake it up and we believe that come 27th December, Omoluabi Savings and Loans Limited would have been able to raise that 1.65billion share and the share would be public, The law of the country does not allow us to restrict it to only Osun citizens but if we have preference of allotment, we will give it to Osun indigenes and residents.
What is the advantage of the offer to the people of the state?
It would be promising, I am not supposed to give futuristic performance but I know that there would be opportunity for the holders to trade and there would be opportunity for the performances to gain and honestly judging by the performance of Osun, anything Osun steps in, God prospers it. So, it is going to benefit the people of the state.
With the problems that befall the capital market in the past, is there any hope for the offer in the state?
One thing with the performance of shares is fundamentals. There is no doubt about it that there was a bubble period in capital market when people were not looking at the performance of the company they want to buy. That era has gone. The Security Exchange Commission and Nigerian Stock Exchange have put rules to prevent sharp practices. We believe that is rebounding. If you look at the capital market since the beginning of this year, it has being gaining. If you are holding Guinness share and that of International Breweries Plc, you would have made money. We believe in fundamentals of Omoluabi Savings and Loans, we will strive hard to sustain our performance.
With the increase in Omoluabi Savings and Loans capital, what would be the faith of Housing Mortgage?
The faith of Housing Mortgage is that Omoluabi Savings and Loans will now have more capital to trade and to lend to Housing Mortgagees, who are the recipient of mortgage services. People that want 10, 20 years mortgage to buy a house from four to ten million naira, Omoluabi will now have the capacity to do that. So, think of a multiplier effect of increasing the shareholders’ fund, which enables you to do more business in terms of capacity as a bank; it will also enable you to attract more deposits because there is always be a deposit ratio between your shareholders fund and your deposit. Now, it can take more deposit and it can also do more business.
What is your take on what the Federal Government want to do by selling our refineries?
Well, when you want to sell your asset you must ask yourself what is the worth of that asset? Just as the company has its net worth, I gave you an example of Omoluabi Savings and Loans that it has over 1billion net worth it is known to be a mortgage company with non performing asset. So, if the Federal Government wants to sell its refineries, there is a way to do it because the prospective buyer would want to know what the asset is worth. The consequence on the nation is that if the refineries are sold and made operational and functional, the
Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) are international commodity; the prices would be affected by the international prices. If it is made functional whether you have absorbed operation, government can still own it and absorb operation with a very strong performance agreement. Government can retain the ownership and source for a credible operator, that is another option but when you take it out of the government’s budgetary system it would be much more efficient.

Modakeke – (3)

Modakeke - (3)Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Saturday pledged to restore the lost glory of Modakeke in 2014.
Aregbesola made the promise in a message to the 28th Modakeke Ako-ri-aaye Day Celebration and Launch of N500million Community Development Fund. The governor, represented by the Permanent Secretary, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Fatai Kolawole, said more local governments would be created.
He said this issue, which had been before the Osun Assembly, would be actualised and would surely favour the people of Modakeke.
“t is my fervent hope and prayer that the actualisation of this long-standing aspiration of the community will usher in total peace and progress in Osun and Ife land in particular’’, he said.
Aregbesola added that Modakeke had not been left behind in the state development projects. He said that projects undertaken in Modakeke included the construction of 900-capacity middle school and provision of transformers to new areas in the town.
The governor urged individuals and corporate bodies to complement these gestures through donations to the Community Development Fund. Earlier, the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Francis Adedoyin, called on parents to educate their children and lay good foundation for them so as to have a brighter future.
Adedoyin described education as the best legacy parents could give their children. He urged parents to pay their children’s school fees and monitor them regularly. The traditional ruler said that community development should be a joint responsibility and encouraged all sons and daughters of Modakeke living abroad to come home to lend support.
The National President of Modakeke Progress Union, Mr Tajudeen Oke, said the indigenes had realised that government alone could not provide all their needs. Oke said that this prompted them to raise funds for the development of the community.
He appealed to everyone to donate generously to the development fund to complete the Events Centre Complex. Oke said the donations would be wisely used for the development of Modakeke.

Osun Banks Get Ultimatum To Remit Taxes To Govt

COMMERCIAL banks operating in Osun State have been given December 31 deadline to settle outstanding debts amounting to about N1 billion owed the state government in form of taxes deducted from their staff, withholding taxes and other taxes and rates due to Osun State government.
Acting Chairman, Osun State Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Mr. Dayo Oyebanji, who gave this directive, said the financial institutions have been given adequate time to remit the funds before the ultimatum was set.
Addressing reporters yesterday in Osogbo, Oyebanji said the state government had directed the affected banks that all outstanding taxes, withholding taxes and other taxes, must be paid into the coffers of the state government on or before December 31, 2013, failure of which they would be sanctioned and delisted as agent for collection of taxes in the state.
The state government was also said to have directed all banks collecting money and taxes on its behalf to, within the same period, integrate into the new e-payment system and ensure that all monies and taxes are promptly paid into the state government account for automatic revenue receipts to payers.
It also frowned against alleged delay in the sweeping or remittance of money collected on behalf of the government by banks, saying that the delay in posting revenue collected on behalf of the government through e-payment system into the general revenue account, impedes flow of income.
Oyebanji, who did not name the affected banks, declared that the government had resolved that non-compliant banks over integration on e-payment application risk being delisted from revenue collection agents of the state government. The state IRS, in a warning letter written to banks and entitled: “Demand Notices on Liabilities from Backduty
Investigation on PAYE, Withholding and Development Levy for the PAYE (Amended Liability 2012)”, and signed by Dayo Oyebanji dated December 13, 2013, said: “Please, be informed that our board would be left with no other option than to disdain your bank provided you failed to settle your backduty liabilities mainly on PAYE and withholding taxes for the year 2012.
He said: “We have been on this reconciliation exercise for almost six months and kindly note that the board has been very considerate to your bank based on the existing good relationship, that explains why we have waited for this long to enable us give adequate consideration to your appeal”, the board maintained.

Governor State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola acknowledging cheers, during the 2013 Osun Osogbo Festival, at the Osun grove, Osogbo, State of Osun on Friday 23-08-2013
Towards the end of Nigeria the Beautiful, a dance drama staged on Thursday, August 22 at Government House in Osogbo, a spectacled character in the traditional up-and-down dress worn by those in the Niger Delta, complete with bowler hat, dominates centre stage. His appearance raises a murmur in the audience. There is no doubt the historical figure he is playing in Nigeria’s tortuous journey to nationhood and fragile existence since amalgamation in 1914.

Modakeke – (5)

Modakeke - (5) Modakeke - (4)
“Good thing sells itself”, the saying goes- and this popular adage thus came manifested in the ancient town of Modakeke Friday, when Governor Rauf Aregbesola entered the town around 2.30pm.
His convoy rolled-in; in its usual ‘silent’ manner- without siren. This, however did not prevent the ‘Akoraye’ sons and daughter from taking notice that the trail blazing governor Aregbesola had stepped on their soil.
In their mammoth, they trooped out right from the neighbouring towns of Famia, Koola, Oyere Aborisade, Onisooro, Kugbe, Kinkin yiun “to show support for the continuity of Aregbesola’s progressive government”, they sang as they ran after the governor’s convoy- women and children especially.
Addressing them, Governor Aregbesola hyped on the need for the people to ensure that they partake in the coming voters’ registration exercise to be conducted by INEC. He warned those who have already registered to avoid double registration so as not to be disenfranchised.
He urged the people to make sure their names are on the voters register just as he advised them not to allow themselves to be deceived or manipulated by the people he described as “only being concerned chiefly with their personal profit and pleasure”, He added that such people go about trying to buy their voters card from them.
While appreciation the people of Modakeke for standing by the government and the party through thick and thin, governor Aregbesola announced that the road leading to Oke D.O along Ondo road in Madakeke will be repaired before election.
The Osun governor noted that the show of love and general acceptance of the Modakeke people was “an indication that every Akoraye son and daughter recognises and appreciates good governance. “That is why the town is the first town to completely endorse us for second term”, he said. He expressed optimism that other towns in the state will begin to follow suit.
In a welcome address, FIFA and CAF instructor and former Super Eagles coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde- a ‘son of the soil’, praised the Governor for the various steps taken so far aimed at ensuring peace in the land; and also on his developmental strides across the state in the area of infrastructure development.
The former Super Eagles coach said “every true son and daughter of Modakeke recognises no other governorship candidate but Aregbesola”.
“We are aware of a development causing some amusement by way of someone who is also traced to Akoraye, as saying he wants to contest the governorship. Whom are you all going to line up for in the next election? He asked the people, who answered thunderously, “Aregbesola!”
In a goodwill message, a Senator representing Ife/Ijesa Federal Constituency- Babajide Omoworare commended the people for turning out in their large number to expressed their “unalloyed support for Aregbesola and APC generally”; adding that the town in known for supporting the progressives at all times. He urged them to pray for Aregbesola and his government. Also speaking, the APC youth leader in the South West, Alhaji Abdulahi Enilolobo described the state of Osun as very lucky.
“Aregbesola’s emergence as Osun governor is a loss for Lagos because of what we know him for and what he did for Lagos for eight years.
“Most of the development we see in Lagos today are the roadmap he left as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure. What Aregbesola left more than five years ago s is what is still being used as a template in Lagos state till date”, said Enilolobo.
He urged the people to ensure that they vote Aregbesola back into office come 2014, He added that by the time the Governor completes his years in office his achievement would have surpassed the achievements of past administrations in the state put together.
The duo of the state party chairman, Elder Lowo Adebiyi and a member of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Segun Adeyeni urged the people of Modakeke and its environs to continue to support the government and the party, stressing that it is only the All Progressives Congress that can move the state and the country forward in the right direction.
Governor Aregbesola had earlier paid homage on the Ogunsua of Madakeke- His Highness, Frances Adedoyin in his palace where the monarch described the Governor as a pace setter in the state.
The monarch said “the achievement of the Governor since taking charge of governance in the state is unprecedented. We only ask those working with him to be faithful to him and the people in the course of trying to move the state forward”.
