The State Government of Osun said it has engaged several youth in productive venture through its various empowerment programmes, especially, the training of about 20,000 indigenes in Information Communication Technology, ICT.

This was revealed over the weekend during a briefing by the Project coordinator of Osun Youths Empowerment Scheme Technology (OYESTECH), Mr. Abiodun Fesobi in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.

According to him, the programme is designed as an exit plan for OYES volunteers in the state and also to serve as support based for other interested participants to be self-reliant.

He hinted that the objective of the programme is to impact participants with required skill which will enable them to be employable by any organisation and become business owners.

“OYESTECH is an information and Communication Technology branch of the widely accepted Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme, OYES which is aimed at impacting the participants with required skills so as to enable them employable and become business owners.

“The scheme is all about skill acquisition through knowledge transfer with 10 training centres across the state which gives training on various sections such as phone repairs, electronics computer assembling, computer usage and entrepreneurship.
Aside 5,000 participants trained in the first batch of the scheme, additional 15,000 have been trained in different aspect of applied technology and they also re-trained many others.

He said, “Some of our graduates have also gone ahead to train over 150 persons; with success stories in their businesses.

“In order to achieve this set objectives the government through its investment arm; Osun State Investment Company Limited, OSICOL embarked on selection of technical partner; RLG and through signing of memorandum of understanding and admission of 5000 trainees per batch in four batches and at the end of it certificate were issued to participants.

In separate interviews, the beneficiaries said that the programme has enhanced their living condition and that of their families by making them productive and enable them to give back to the society.

One of the beneficiaries identified as Oseni Ibrahim, said, “I am one of the beneficiaries of the OYESTECH, the government have tried by giving us the best and also sending us to Ghana for training. We were trained on information technology and at our return; government equipped us with necessary tools which we are all satisfied with.

Another beneficiary who is now the Director of Bayotek Computer Service, Mr. Abdul-Hakeem Babatunde relaying his experience, said, “Bayotek computer service was founded after I graduated from the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme Technology in 2011 and we were given a mandate to empower other youths so as to complement government’s efforts at reducing unemployment among the youth.

“I have one of my centres at Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State and also have a Cybercafe as an extension where I also train students on how to work on software and hardware of computers. I have trained over 100 youths.

Also speaking, Anthonia Ogundare lauded the state government for the opportunity given her and many others to be part of the scheme adding that the scheme has made youths in the state productive.

“I have been a beneficiary of this programme; I was privileged to be chosen among 150 beneficiaries who were sponsored to Ghana by Osun state government for a month internship and at our return I was employed and I have since been working at Adulawo Technology City in Ilesa.

“This is one programme that has helped the youths in securing jobs to help their family and future. I have been learning a lot and gaining more knowledge every day”.

Recall that the scheme which is aimed at job creation through ICT was inaugurated by the state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, in 2011.

OYESTECH is one of the components of Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) which has recruited over 40,000 youths. The programme now in its sixth year, has successfully scaled down youths unemployment and profitably engaged them in various areas of ICT.

Also, the United Nations in its latest Global multi-dimensional poverty index report on Nigeria ranked the state of Osun as the 2nd state after Lagos with least poverty amongst the 36 states in Nigeria. This is due to the several empowerment programmes of the government which has successfully moved hundreds of thousands away from the poverty line.

Monkeypox

Following the outbreak of monkey pox in more states, the Osun Government has set up three quarantine centres as measures to control the disease in case of an outbreak in the state.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Osogbo.
There have been reported cases of outbreak of monkey pox in seven states, including Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Lagos.
Isamotu said two of the quarantine centres were located in Irepodun Local Government Area and the other, in Boripe Local Government.
He said though there had been no reported case of the disease in the state, government had put all its surveillance officials on a red alert.
The commissioner also said that the state government would train its health officials on how to handle patients in case of any incident.
He said the state government had also embarked on sensitisation programmes on television and radio on the causes and preventive measures against the disease.
According Isamotu, monkey pox is a viral infection which is self limiting with no specific treatment or vaccine for the cure.
The commissioner however said that the spread could be controlled.
He urged the residents to cultivate the habit of hand washing, endevour to thoroughly boil their meat before eating and avoid contact with infected persons.
He said some of the symptoms of the virus included, fever, headache and discomforting feelings.
Isamotu said government had dedicated two hotline telephone numbers: 08033908772 and 08035638608 through which residents could contact the relevant authorities, in case of any suspected outbreak.
He urged the people not to panic, adding that the state had what it took to prevent the spread of the virus in case of an outbreak.
“We are fully on alert and government is going to do everything possible to ensure that our people are safe,” he said.

Aregbesola (1)

A first class traditional ruler in Osun, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba AbdulRasheed Adewale Akanbi, at the weekend described the Governor of the State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, as a blessing to the people of the state.

Oluwo said Aregbesola has never disappointed the people of the state since coming to office as most of his campaign promises to citizens have been fulfilled to a reasonable extent.
He stated this at the occasion of his 50th birthday and second year anniversary celebrations on the throne as Oluwo.
Oba Adewale ‎commended the Governor’s sense of commitment to serve God and humanity by using his office to turn around the economic fortunes of Osun in spite of the economic challenges the country is facing.
The traditional ruler expressed satisfaction in the leadership quality of Aregbesola, saying he (Aregbesola) has not in any way disappointed the people of the state.
Oluwo stated that the state government under Aregbesola’s watch has mustered the political will to rewrite the history of the state as manifested in the progress and development the state has witnessed in the last seven years.
According to him, “I am neither a praise singer nor a sycophant, but to say the truth, the current Government in Osun led by our dear brother, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has not disappointed us.
“I have been following the evolution of events in his administration since I became Oluwo and to a greater extent I am convinced with the quality of his governance because I can see his legacy projects all around the state, not only in Iwoland.
“I have personally assessed his government and I have seen the quality of his prudence in all he does. Aregbesola is a leader per excellence. Aregbesola is a diligent and prudent manager of public resources.
“I have tested him and I have seen in him an extreme commitment not only to turn Osun to a must-be-visited state by anyone desirous of good things, a state that will be economically, socially and politically sustainable and self-reliant.
“We all knew the status of our state prior to Aregbesola’s government and we also know the pace of development we have witnessed so far through the present administration. To me, these among other things, are the testimonies of good governance brought to the state.
“I don’t want to mention any of the intervention programmes made by the current government, but all I know is that Aregbesola is a good leader, who loves his state and his people sincerely.
“As a monarch, I don’t tell lies. And my people know me for this. Thus, I can beat my chest on this fact and for me to come up with this judgment on the state government, then I am saying what I saw and perceived.”
Oba Akanbi expressed profound gratitude to Aregbesola for honouring him with his presence, noting that his presence and that of the state’s executive council show the love government has for him.
While advocating the need for Nigerian leaders to champion good governance, Oluwo said power is responsibility and the essence of leadership is service to humanity.
He therefore called on those at the helms of affairs to dedicate themselves to serving the people.
In his remarks, the Governor congratulated Oluwo for aging graciously in spite of the huge task attached to his position as one of the famous traditional rulers.
He appealed to the monarch to slow down, noting that at 50 years old, he (the monarch) must begin to see things of the world as ephemeral.
Aregbesola rejoiced with the monarch’s family, Iwo indigenes and the entire people of the state on the occasion of the Oluwo’s 50th birthday anniversary.

Mr Remi Omowaiye, the  Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology in Osun, has described Gov. Rauf Aregbesola as a symbol of good governance for upcoming generations.

Omowaiye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ibadan  that the governor had  promoted growth and development in the state.

He also described as laughable the threats by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take over in Osun in  2018.

Highlighting Aregbesola’s achievements, he stated that the school feeding programme of  the  administration had  increased primary school enrollment by 60 percent.

Omowaiye said the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) as well as massive road and school infrastructure projects had   become models  for other states.

Unfortunately, the governor has been circumstantial victim of misrepresentation and orchestrated media attack.

“It is on record that the SUKUK loan which was used as part of the re-engineering tool in the state has become a template for the Federal Government  now despite the widespread criticism against the noble idea.

“Even some European countries have become beneficiaries of the loan too after Osun,’’ he said.

He said that the bailout fund given to the state was transparently and judiciously spent on the payment of salaries and pension to state and local government workers as well as OYES cadets.

The commissioner stated that the state was given a  clean bill by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission after  investigation of alleged diversion of bailout funds  and Paris Club refund.

The occasion of the 57th anniversary of national independence should give us a cause for deep reflection and critical thinking without necessarily taking anything away from the celebration.

I use this occasion to congratulate Nigerians, the good people of Osun in particular. It is a thing of great joy, irrespective of our collective or individual circumstances, to be alive to celebrate the anniversary of our nation’s independence.
For some of us who were born before independence, it was a momentous event for us. Though I was a child at independence in 1960, the ferments of the struggle against colonialism still remained with us in my growing up years while the substitution and replacement of white colonialists with our people that followed was dramatic enough to give us a deeper appreciation of independence.

With the benefit of hindsight, some of the hopes and aspirations of the pre and immediate post independence era have been betrayed and this is regrettable. We dreamt then of Nigeria becoming a superpower in one or two decades after independence. This dream was even shared by some of the great powers of the era who saw us as potential competitors, first for regional hegemony and also on a global scale in economic, social, political, sporting and diplomatic contests. Many of them have since relaxed, feeling their fears then were unfounded. However, the dream of greatness is an undying one. Nigeria can and will still be great.
Though this issue has been over flogged, it still needs reiterating – that our bane since military interregnum has been overt reliance on rent from crude oil. Let us be clear on this, oil is a blessing, not a curse. The problem is what you make of it. Oil has been a blessing in the Scandinavian countries, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Angola, United States, Britain, Norway, Venezuela, Canada, Russia and several other places where it has been well utilized as a catalyst for development and wealth creation.
Our own problem, like several oil rich nations, is that we live on its rent and do not build any productive activity around it. That is why, beyond exportation, oil is practically useless for us. We cannot even refine for local consumption until current efforts by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Even then, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources told us recently that 92 per cent of local consumption is still being imported at the cost of $28 billion in 2016. We then import every other thing, including food, clothing and most of our building materials.
Now, the price of oil has fallen and the portents are still bad. This is in the wake of a tectonic shift in technology from internal combustion engines to electrical engines in automobiles.
Nevertheless, a lot of people still believe we are rich with crude oil, only if there is equitable distribution of the resources. Now, corruption has made the scarcity to be worse. Corruption is evil, it disrupts the development process and should be stamped out. However, without corruption, we are still a poor nation, even with oil.
Let us do this simple calculation. Nigeria’s daily production quota from OPEC is put at 2.1 million barrels per day. Let us note that we have never met this production and sales quota in the last 10 years. Nevertheless, if we multiply this imaginary production quota with 365 days, which make a year, we have 766.5 million barrels of crude oil as our total foreign exchange oil earning resource. This is assuming there is no production disruption from militants’ activities in the Niger Delta and unsold inventory which could be up to half a million barrels sometimes.
Since oil sells for an average of $50 now, this will give us $38.325 billion in total sales per annum. Remember we have not deducted production and associated expenditures; this is the gross income, joint venture partners are assumed volunteers.
If we divide this amount by 170 million, which is our conservative population estimate, it goes round to roughly $225.44 per head per annum. This is further reducible to $18.786 in a month. At an exchange rate of N370, it amounts to N7,000. This calculation simply means that every Nigerian is entitled to N7,000 monthly from oil wealth at best!
How about income from other sources? Since oil accounts for 70 per cent of total national revenue, this figure will only rise to  N10,000.
Let’s say someone wants to experiment with this calculation and give to every Nigerian N10,000 unearned income, it means there will be no government; bureaucracy and associated wages, paying salaries, no executive, legislature and the judiciary, no police, military, public education, roads, airport, international relations, etc. This without a doubt means anarchy.
I have gone to this length to demonstrate that we are not rich at all, even with the oil wealth. The per capita income from oil would probably have been better if we have just one tenth of our population.
This makes the issue of diversification of our economy and productivity imperative. Productivity is the ability to alter any state of matter or service, alone or in combinations into a more desirable form – product or service. The process of bringing about that alteration, or the effort we put into achieving this, is called work.
The initial condition or base material for these processes is often as freely set by nature, while the derived output or product is as contrived by man in his imagination. Thus, sound notes put together productively equals music, otherwise it is noise. Rubbles put together constructively is a house, otherwise it is just a dump of rubbles.
The challenge before us as a nation is therefore to earn income from productivity, not from rent. On this note, I will like to posit that we should get 50 million of our compatriots to be working i.e. engaged in productive activities that will bring them at least N25,000 a month. From this, N1.25 trillion will be generated in the economy every month from real productive engagement.

These jobs can be created and paid for by ways and means in diverse areas of the economy like agriculture and food production, clothing and footwear, housing, environment, critical public infrastructure like roads, bridges, airports, railways, water resources development etc that will provide basic needs for the people and cut our imports by 90 per cent, reducing foreign goods to critical machineries and raw materials we do not have at home. This will catapult Nigeria into a superpower within two decades.
In Osun we are already working on this. We are striving to put at least one million of our over four million population to work. If they earn a minimum of N25,000 a month, a 10 per cent tax from this will give us revenue of N2.5billion every month. This amount will be sufficient to run the government, pay workers, develop our state and bring prosperity to all.
If this is replicated in all the states of the federation, Nigeria will be prosperous without oil money. This is my dream for our country and it is my sincere hope that at this occasion of our independence celebration, leaders in the public and private sectors will critically engage this idea.
Once again, I congratulate all Nigerians and wish us all a happy Independence celebration.

Alhaja Sherifat Aregbesola, the First Lady of the State of Osun presenting cheque to one of the winners of Calisthenic competition.

He said the just concluded competition across the state was on volunteering basis adding that the parents provided the sport kits for their children which reduces the government expenses on the competition.
