Mini-Buses – 2

Mini-Buses - 2

In its continued bid to make life more meaningful for the people of the State of Osun, another set of empowerment initiatives were recently launched by the state government with N4billion already earmarked as interest free loan to small and medium scale business operators under its micro credit scheme.

The government also distributed 40 mini buses otherwise called “Korope”, to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to boost the transportation system in the state and empower the operators of the mini buses.

Various empowerment schemes had in the past been introduced by the current administration to farmers through the Quick Impact Intervention Programme for farmers (QIIP) under which more than 12,000 cooperative farmers had been supported to the tune of N753 million; empowerment of over 2,000 textile dealers and 332 cocoyam off-takers with a combined sum of over N233 million.

The state government had also facilitated in December 2013, the procurement and distribution of 70 new Toyota Hiace buses worth N384.65 million to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

Speaking at the launching of the Osun Micro-Credit Agency and distribution of mini buses to members of the cooperative transporters, the state Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Ismaila Adekunle Jayeoba-Alagbada, said that the two-in-one event was to showcase the new empowerment initiatives of the current administration, which he described as focused and people-oriented administration. He explained that the initiatives were put in place towards the delivery of democracy benefits to the people of the state.  The commissioner noted that the programmes were set out to pragmatically promote the commercial and industrial development of the state through the empowerment of the people on the platform of cooperatives as well as informal and formal business outfits.

On the micro credit scheme, Alagbada said that it was part of an elaborate and integrated approach of the state government to empower the people for their total emancipation.

According to him, “there is a deliberate connect between the Omoluabi Life Academy and the agency. The Omoluabi Life Academy, which has already been established by the Aregbesola administration within the premises of the Industrial Development Centre along Ilesa road, Osogbp is a hands-on, short-term and special training centre where life-long skills will be acquired by all classes of people who seek alternative competencies, irrespective of their age or level of literacy, with a view to becoming self-employed and employers of labour.  “Graduates of the academy will, no doubt, require financial empowerment to turn their acquired skills to profitable business ventures. This is where the Osun Micro-Credit Agency will come in to assist them to actualize their business dreams.

He further that the support of the agency will certainly not be resisted to the products of the Life Academy but will be available to all who wish to start, expand or modernsise their enterprises.

The commissioner, therefore, called on artisans, market men and women, operators of micro, small and medium scale enterprises, farmers and all others who are engaged in viable economic activities to avail themselves of the opportunities which the micro-credit agency provided.

He thanked Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his total commitment to the realization of the objectives and indeed, the overall socio-economic transformation of the state.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, who graced the occasion held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park in Osogbo noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a party of the masses and will at no time consider any policy that will be against the people.

He told the gathering that is it absolute untrue that his government banned motorcyclists otherwise called Okada from Lagos.

Fashola stated that what his government did was to merely restrict the operators from plying highways as a way of protecting their lives.

He disclosed that since the restriction about six months ago, Okada-induced deaths and injuries have almost varnished on Lagos roads.  “We want what is good for our people, including security and protection of their lives. Do not let the opposition tell you lies that we banned Okada on Lagos streets. We have welfare of our people at heart.

“In fact, one of the cardinal policies of APC is to guarantee the welfare and well-being of our people.

Speaking at the event, Aregbesola held that the target of the state government is to be like Lagos State in no distant time. He explained that the intention of the state government is to boost the economy of the state into the production of vehicle soon.

The governor said welfare, security and empowerment of the people are primary responsibilities of a good government Aregbesola averred  that any government that brings hardship rather than succour to the people is a devilish government.

He explained that since  the inception of his administration, the state government has pursued welfare, peace, progress and development of the people of the state.

“It is on the other hand a chance for our people to reap the benefits of their trust and support for our government.

“Our own way of serving our people and showing our gratitude to them is not by sharing money which they will spend within a very short time. Rather, what we do is to give them the means and capacity to be able to make money by themselves and for themselves. In other words, we empower our people to be economically productive and financially independent.

“In this way, we tell our people certain things about us: that we are a government of responsibility, accountability and transparency.

“We are a government that is truly committed to the welfare and well-being of our people; and we will continue to serve them to the best of our abilities”, Aregbesola declared.

While noting that the PDP has never embarked on progressive and developmental oriented programmes for seven and half years it was in saddle of responsibility in the state, Aregbesola maintained that his government will not relent in making sure that lives bearable to the masses.

“When we sought for your votes in 2006/2007, we promised to banish poverty and hunger. We promised to provide among other things developmental programmes and we have been achieving this.

On the micro credit loan agency, Governor Rauf Aregbesola charged members of the cooperative societies to work together towards the sustainability of the agency and loan, adding that “the state is working towards production of vehicle”.

He also said that his administration has no intention to ban the use of commercial motorcycles saying in as much you don’t use the motorcycles to aid violence and vices in the state.

He advised the people of the state against be intimidated by the presence of heavy security operatives during the August 9th 2014 gubernatorial election.

He averred that governorship position is not a household inheritance for any political party, so the boast by a political to take over the state by force with the use of security operatives cannot hold water. We are in democracy.

“Even if it rains or sun shine on the election day, go out and vote. Stay with your vote and ensure that it is counted in your presence.

Speaking on behalf of the transporters, Asimiyu Oladejo, President Cooperative Transporters expressed appreciation to Governor Rauf Aregbesola for the gesture saying “no government has ever bought a vehicle for us in the history of this state. Government did not only by the buses for us; the government also tarred the roads so that the buses will be durable.”

He assured of the support of the members of the union and promised that the mini buses would be used for the development of the state.

Titi-Laoye

Titi-LaoyeTHE Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, on Tuesday called on market men and women in the state to organise themselves into co-operative societies in order to have access to loans from the state’s micro-credit scheme recently inaugurated by the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Deputy Governor, who spoke during a sensitisation rally of womenfolk held at the popular Igbona, Olu-ode and Oja-Oba markets in Osogbo, Osun State capital, and witnessed by a large turn-out of traders who expressed solidarity and support for the second term bid in office of Governor Aregbesola, said it was through co-operative associations that women could receive sufficient fund to expand their businesses.
She noted that women as critical sector play important role in family stabilisation and economic emancipation of the society, saying that without the input of women, nothing in the society can attain progress.
She urged women to play active role in the electoral process in the interest of survival of democracy, stressing that the role of women in previous elections in the country cannot be over-emphasised.
Laoye-Tomori urged the female folk to vote en-masse for the APC in the August 9 governorship poll, assuring that the party would continue to give their welfare necessary attention. She said her boss had fulfilled all his electioneering campaign promises as enshrined in the six-point integral action plan of APC.
She, therefore, advised them not to sell their voter’s cards but to use them as weapon to enthrone credible leadership that would serve their interest.
Meanwhile, wife of Osun State governor, Alhaja Sherifat Aregbesola, has also urged women in Osun State to unite for peace and ensure that the transformation agenda of the current administration continues by re-electing Governor Rauf Aregbesola in the August governorship poll.
Mrs. Aregbesola gave the admonition in Osogbo, Osun State capital, at a rally tagged: “Women in Politics” organised by her office in conjunction with the state Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
The event, which was held at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, was attended by political office holders, party chieftains, lawmakers, civil society groups, market women and others.
Deputy Governor Laoye-Tomori, who urged the market men and women not to succumb to antics and political manipulation of the opposition, advised them to guard their voters’ cards jealously and desist from giving them to the opposition party which is allegedly hell bent in returning to the state at all cost.
She also cautioned youths in the state to avoid temptation of being used as political thugs by desperate politicians seeking support of the people.
Mrs. Aregbesola noted that the only way to ensure that the ongoing transformation continued is to ensure that her husband emerge victorious in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
She enjoined women in the state to always champion the crusade for peace, adding that they should also ensure their children shun thuggery and violence in the coming election.
She also called on women to participate more in politics, saying it was a better way of widening the frontiers of development in the society.
In his speech at the event, Governor Aregbesola expressed optimism in women, stressing that his administration had been carrying women along in all its activities since inception in view of the important role they play in any society.
He promised to bring more women on board if re-elected in the forthcoming election.
However, the guest speaker, Mrs. Olusola Oluyamo, called on government at all levels to make sure that women are giving more recognition in governance.
The State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Mofolake Adegboyega, saluted the dutifulness and vibrancy of women in the state, saying: “If we as women allow peace to reign, together we will work assiduously to build a better society where people learn to love, tolerate one another, live in harmony and foster development.

Dad_1Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said that there is no need to deploy additional security operatives for the governorship election coming up on August 9.
Aregbesola said this in Osogbo on Monday at a forum organised by his wife, Serifat, to sensitise women in the state on the need to participate actively in the election.
The governor said that some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state had been threatening to use “federal might” to unleash terror on the people.
He said, “Some are threatening to use federal might to harass the people. Don’t be afraid of them. Tax payers’ money was used to buy soldiers’ uniforms, boots and guns.
“Nobody can intimidate us because we will not run foul of the law. Don’t go to polling units with any weapon, just arm yourself with your voter cards and vote the APC.
“We have enough policemen, soldiers, SSS operatives and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. In 2011, we went to the poll without violence. The only violence recorded was five days before election where five persons were killed at Isale Agbara in Ile-Ife.
“The police bungled the case and that is why some of the people are walking freely and are boasting again that they would use federal might.”
The governor accused the police of handling the case with negligence.
In her speech, the governor’s wife urged women to be actively involved in politics, appealing to them to vote for her husband in the election.

Mini-Buses – 2

Mini-Buses - 2The determination and commitment of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola led administration in Osun State to make the state the hub of commerce received a boost recently with the commissioning of an ultra modern market, Ayegbaju International Market in Osogbo, Osun State Capital.

Market men, market women, artisans and shop owners were full of praises and prayers when the tw-phased new market which cost the state government a whopping sum of N2.3billion was commissioned with fanfare.

The commissioning was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life. The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Larooye II appeared happiest of all the guests that witnessed the occasion being the traditional head of Osogbo, the state capital.

He drove to the venue of the event in convoy of other traditional rulers from across the state.

Though there had beene markets in Osogbo, the capital city of Osun State all this while, they were more of street or roadside markets where people display their goods and wares by the streets and roadsides.

The implications had been that whenever the market was in session, such as at the markets at Igbona, Olu-Ode, Sabo, Orisumbare, MDS, Alekunwodo, Akindeko among others, there would be traffic gridlock along these busy roads and making life unbearable for motorists.

Effort by the then Colonel Theophilus Bamigboye military regime in the state to construct the new Orisumbare Market at MDS area could not however assuage the situation as the market was inadequate even as it was not meant for agricultural goods and food items.

Nevertheless,  the current administration on assumption of office facilitated the construction and establishment of three markets at the same time in a bid to restore the old commercial activities of Osogbo. The markets are Ayegbaju, Dagbolu and Aje International Markets.

As at the time of filling this report, Aje International Market is also nearing completion.

One unique facility provided at the market is the online shopping and home delivery services tagged: e-business. It is the first online shopping facility in the South West of Nigeria.

The Ayegbaju market built on eight hectares of land was conducted under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement in collaboration with Unity Bank. The market is also equipped with facilities such as mini stalls, open stalls, warehouses, locked-up shops, exclusive shops, fire station, police station, banks, medical centre, church, bukataria, meat and fish stalls, washbay, coldrooms, cafeteria, public toilets, roads networks, drainages, an entrance with a gatehouse and public toilets among other facilities.

Others are administrative and maintenance offices, administrative lodge, market coordinator office, mosque, car parks, electrical transformers and distribution network, CCTV Cameras and installation of public address system, under-ground and overhead water tank, two industrial bore holes, water reticulation and generators.

Besides, provision was made to accommodate petty traders, sellers of food items and ingredients to facilitate easy access to domestic needs of users of the market.

Speaking at the commissioning event, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Integration, Barrister Bashir Ajibola said that the project was aimed to ensure the return Osogbo to her old commercial centre status where people from far and near would come to trade.

He said that since the creation of the state, there has not been a time when the structural and social transformation of the state been attended to with such zeal and passion as that of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

He noted that the people of the state began to see; have the feeling of and comprehend Aregbesola’s plan of action within his first 100 days in office.

Ajibola noted that Aregbesola should be celebrated for embarking on the project, noting that even against all odds from the opposition, the Aregbesola administration has decided to be accountable to the people of Osun.

“In line with Mr. Governor’s philosophy of inclusive economic growth, he has directed Osun Property Development Corporation (OSPDC), Omoluabi Savings and Loans Plc and Osun Investment Company Ltd. to acquire shops for onward disposition to Osun residents and civil servants at highly subsidised rates and payable installmentally.

“These, government have through the agencies currently have100 lock-up shops; 50 mini stalls; 30 open stalls and 12 exclusive offices available. These shops will be distributed to genuine but indigent traders at favourable and liberal payment terms.

He disclosed further that Governor Aregbesola has approved the construction of modern market in all the cities under the urban renewal programmes of the state.

The developer of the market, Engineer Olufemi Oshoniyi of Edward Property Konsult Limited disclosed the project was in line with the Six Point Integral Action Plan of Governor Rauf Aregbesola to banish poverty, hunger and provide employment among others.

He assured that the third phase of the project will be completed soon adding that the layout of the market and roads were named after some indigene of Osogbo for their struggle, commitment, hardwork, and contribution to the growth and success of Osogbo and the State in general.

The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun expressed appreciation to the Governor for the wonderful feat.

He opined that the people of Osogbo will forever be grateful to the administration of Aregbesola for turning Osogbo the state capital into what he described as a mega-city through various infrastructural developments.

In her own remark, the Iyaloja General, Alhaja Awawu Asindemade appreciated the governor for his genuine interest in the affairs of the market women and the people of the state at large.

Alhaja Asindemade said the market will not only boost the economy of the state but also affect the lives of the entire citizenry positively

Performing the commissioning of the market, Governor Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola expressed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people of the state irrespective of their religion or political affiliation promising to make Osun the nerve centre of commerce in the South West and Nigeria at large.
