The Ministry is in charge of matters relating to women and children in the State. Some areas of work include but are not limited to:

  • Manage overall matters relating to women such as coordination of women non-governmental organizations, supervision of women development centers, serving as information centres on women programmes and liaising with international bodies on women programmes (International Women Day)
  • Empowerment of women through formation and promotion of women co-operative societies, women education (provision and rehabilitation of vocational training centres) promotion and provision of small-scale industries and commercial activities amongst women groups in conjunction with Ministry of Cooperatives and Empowerment technical assistance to women groups, promotion of income generating and economic activities of women in rural areas
  • Mobilization of women through public enlightenment programmes, encouraging solidarity among women groups and coordinating Ministerial programmes for women
  • Safeguard and protect the interest of women against rape, discrimination, assault and harassment and seeing to the implementation of Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
