Vision of the Ministry

Vision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security includes achieving food security, wealth / job creation, making the state of Osun the hub of agricultural and emporium of commerce in Southwestern Nigeria

Mission of the Ministry

The mission of achieving food security, wealth and job creation youth empowerment, economic transformation and making the State of Osun the hub of agriculture and an emporium of commerce in the South West of Nigeria

Objectives Of the Ministry

The main objectives of the ministry are to motivate, stimulate and educate the private sector in the optimal utilization and improvement of our agricultural resources in the overall interest of the State. Other objectives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security are to

  • Advise government on the formation of policies that can transform agricultural activities in the state including crops, livestock and fisheries;
  • Stimulate increase in the production of, and improvement in, the quality of food crop, livestock export and industrial crops through the application of modern production technology
  • Initiate and improve rural institutions that will accelerate the tempo of the agricultural development;
  • provide necessary training for and supply at subsidized costs, the major farm input required by farmers;
  • insure good health for livestock population in the state by diagnosing and treating of livestock disease by inoculation;
  • ensure that meat production is safe and wholesome for human consumption;
  • test, investigate, adapt and develop new machinery in respect of clearing, cultivation, drying and storage;
  • motivate, stimulate and educate the private sector in the optimum utilization and improvement of the non-extraction natural resources of the state
  • control pest, supervise storage and ensure proper grading of produce to bring about maximum return of farmers;
  • be involve in modern direct production where private efforts are negligible as in dairy production
  • provide input, tools equipment and other facilities at subsidy with a view to enabling the farmers increase their productivity and scope of operation, process/store and market their produce orderly; and
  • provide technical know-how to farmers so that they can make the best use of the facilities availed to them by the government

Functions And Responsibilities

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the overall agricultural development process in the state. Hence agricultural policies which are aimed at improving both the economic and social cultural status of farmers irrespective of scale and area of operation are articulated and implemented by the State Government through the Ministry

Except in areas where private efforts are negligible as in dairy production and where the private sector shows no meaningful interest, the Ministry does not involve itself in direct commercial production but encourages agriculture to become private sector driven

The role of the Ministry from the foregoing can be broadly grouped into provision of inputs, tools, equipment and facilities to enable farmers increase their productivity in their area/ field of operations and to process / store and market their produce orderly and also back the provisions above with technical know-how so that farmers can make the best use of them.

The Ministry produce an enabling environment for the existing and prospective farmers. Also to train and demonstrate areas of agricultural production that are yet to be attractive to the private sector
